I've never tried any weebshit, but I finally decided to try and play JRPGs.
Is there anything out there that's not overly shocking for a newfag to the genre? I mean anything with a good combat system whose characters are not just lolis and futas.
>>
>>342078414
I don't believe you if you claim you've never played Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound or any Final Fantasy.
>>
try nepnep
>>
>>342078414

>mean anything with a good combat system whose characters are not just lolis and futas.

Try 80s/90s JRPGs and Mario RPGs. Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario (you can stop after TTYD or Super Paper Mario), Mario and Luigi. I can recommend several others if you want.
>>
>>342078414

Not a JRPG but play A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening.

There's also Soul Blazer and Terranigma.

Before I forget, there's the PSP version of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together if you want a Japanese interpretation in a medieval take on the Bosnian civil war of the 90s.

There's also Front Mission.

If you want weird shit in the 90s, try Parasite Eve.
>>
>>342078414
Try some SMT, it's soft-core in the J department, but it's plenty RPG. Nocturne is a good starting spot so emulate it or whatever
>>
>>342079413

SMT may be a bit too hardcore for newbies to the genre.
>>
>>342079551
not really so, because it doesn't really hold many Japanese video game tropes. Nocturne, that is. It's a solid series with plenty good games that don't alienate newcomers to the genre.

I'd recommend Digital Devil Saga before Nocturne
He won't have to worry about learning how to fuse shit properly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHJbE_kfybs
>>
>>342079819
I considered that, but he'll eventually need to learn basic fusion if he was going to play the rest of the franchise.
>>
>>342079679

I was talking more about the level of difficulty. It's not that bad for enthusiasts, but toss a JRPG casual into it and they'll have a lot more issues. Seems like a good franchise though, so it's not like I'm discouraging it. I still need to play through it myself, I've only played SMT I so far.
>>
Play Chrono Trigger. No lolis and only one futa (who you kill).
>>
>>342078414

>not just lolis and futas

I've never played a non-hentai RPG that was composed of futanaris. Now I'm wondering what I've been missing.
>>
>>342079768
I don't know what you're trying to say, of course Pokemon is an RPG.
>>
Dragons dogma is decent enough
>>
>>342078414
Persona 4 is good entry level weeb shit.
>>
>>342079907
People with experience in RPGs in general wouldn't have a problem, the "casual filter" matador is only so because the people who jump into these games aren't too bright when considering fusion options.
>>
>>342078414
> I mean anything with a good combat system whose characters are not just lolis and futas.

Japanese degeneration into a country with an insatiable list for loli/futa shit is a relatively recent phenomenon. JRPGs weren't like that up through the early 2000s.

What kind of gameplay do you like? ANY of the well-liked RPGs on the NES, SNES, Genesis, or PSX are rock solid, and you can't go wrong with any of them. There are tons to choose from, and they all have different battle systems.

If you don't want to go the emulation route, you can play some fine ones on Steam. Try out Final Fantasy III, IV, VII, VIII, or IX (V and VII on steam are butchered shit... If you're going to play them, emulate the SNES versions) if you like the look of those games. Tales of Symphonia is fantastic, and that has a bit more action in its battle system. For total action, try Ys III or Ys Origin on Steam.
>>

Pokemon is literally baby's first JRPG
>>
>>342078491
I hate Pokèmon. I always did, ever since I was a kid. They just infuriate me and look retarded as fuck.
Also, I'm 20 and I stated that I "never tried any weebshit", so no, I wasn't around when Earthbound and Chrono Trigger were popular, and no, didn't play Final Fantasy.
>>
>>342078414
I'm gonna be that guy, try Final Fantasy V, don't worry about min-maxing, just use whichever classes you want
>>

This is false.

V and VI were butchered. VII is OK.

Which is why I think DDS would probably be a better starting point
Nocturne doesn't explain how the fusion mechanics or gaining skills from Magatamas work that well outside of reading through the tutorials at the Cathedral

Guys, I think going from never playing a JRPG, before, to jumping into the Megaten series is nuts.

OP can always play Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. That game was made for RPG newbies. It's pretty short, so if you don't like it, it won't waste much of your time, and the music is godlike.

I mostly play on PC and I can borrow a PS2 from a friend, but my bread and butter is Dark Souls (which is not, I've been told, a JRPG despite it being a Japanese RPG. I don't get it). I like Platinum and games like Devil May Cry as well if that can help you, but the rest of my preferences are in the shooter genre.
Oh yeah, I played Undertale and I almost gauged my eyes out.

Then maybe you'd like the Ys series. They're short, so if you don't like them, no worries. Ys III: Oath of Felghana or Ys Origins are good ones to start, both available on steam. Look up some gameplay videos on YouTube and see if you like them.

For something a little slower paced, I'd strongly recommend Tales of Symphonia. Check that out on YouTube, as well.

I'd recommend against any turn based RPGs based on what it sounds that you like. I personally enjoy myself some good Dragon Quest, but it's not for everyone.

Perhaps if you did some emulation, you'd like Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, or Seiten Densestu 3.

Final Fantasy - Generally a newb friendly series. Some here will probably laugh at this suggestion, but you get elitists everywhere. I think the older games in the series are the better ones to start with. FF VII's a good starting point, but really I don't think you can go wrong with IV-VII or IX. VIII's alright too, but I wouldn't recommend it first. I and III are good too I think.

Tales of - Action RPGs. Pretty animeish, but the battle systems are generally good. Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia are all good starting points. Even Phantasia (which I started with, and which remains one of my favorites), though I'd recommend the PSX version of that).

Dragon Quest - Not too hard. Bit grindy, especially the older ones, but they're pretty simple yet fun games, and are pretty classic tales of adventurers roaming a medieval European fantasy world, killing monsters and looting castles and caves.

Pokemon - Pretty simple. Another good candidate for babby's first RPG.

Chrono Trigger - An excellent game for beginners.

I'd suggest Shin Megami Tensei once you've gotten into JRPGs a bit. Or right away if you're not afraid of dying.

I know I'm probably forgetting some obvious games/series, but that's off the top of my head.

Solid advice, right here.

But if OP's bread and butter are shooters and Dark Souls, and he hated Undertale, I think he should lean towards the Action RPG side for starting out.

The Tales games you mentioned are spot on, and Symphonia is on Steam.

Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, and Secret of Evermore are emulateable.

Ys Origins, Ys III, and Ys VI are on Steam.

OP said he could borrow a PS2. Kingdom Hearts 1 might be a great option, too.

She has two forms both with huge amounts of health
She has spells of every element that are stronger than the -dyne version of them, hits the entire party, and can easily kill or almost kill anything that doesn't resist the element (including you which means an immediate game over), as well as a crazy strong multi-hit physical attack, an almighty skill that lowers your party's agility, a skill that rages your entire party, and a skill that just puts shitloads of statuses on your party
She has a skill that simultaneously resets all buffs and debuffs and heals her for a shitload

In her second form each turn she will randomly reflect two damage types
She also gains two more skills, Mem Aleph and M A
Mem Aleph will send all demons of a certain alignment out of your party while M A while instantly kill something no matter what and heal her for that party member's max HP
She can use M A on you which results in an immediate game over

It's been awhile since I've played it, but I think the only anime scenes Phantasia has is the opening of the PSX and PSP versions. >>
>>342083449
There have been countless arguments made for and against it. It usually goes like this:

>if you don't have lots of dialogue choices, customisation and multiple routes to choose from depending on your personal preferences, it's not an RPG
>no, if the gameplay is based on systems derived from the original D&D dice roll style of combat, then it can be called an RPG
>that's not true because you aren't playing a role
>you aren't playing a role but the gameplay comes from the original tabletop RPG, D&D, so it can still be called an RPG
>even if the gameplay is similar, it doesn't matter because the RP in RPG means role play, so if the game doesn't support role play then it's impossible to call it an RPG; call it something else
>why call it something else when it's not only become an accepted norm useful to categorise this kind of game, but also has gameplay more faithful to traditional RPGs whereas other games that call themselves RPGs play more similarly to FPS games.
>the role playing aspect is more important because, yknow, it's a role-playing game
>the gameplay is more important because it's a type of GAME that's being defined

It usually goes back and forth like that. One side considers the role-playing to be more important in defining the games, and the other side considers the gameplay to be more important in defining the games. And the subtext usually is "I think WRPGs/JRPGs are superior and so I need to shit on the other one".

>>
>>342086598
That was a joke. It's not much of an RPG, although you do have to level up weapons and shit. And I think it'd probably put most people off of JRPGs as well, considering it's gameplay and story.
>>
>>342084124
The problem with the whole
>you're not playing a role therefore it's not an RPG
thing is that, by that logic, any Final Fantasy that isn't 1, 3 on the NES (remakes had the orphans become actualy characters), 11, and 14 all aren't RPGs. Because you're playing a character who is pre-defined in that world.
