I know a guy whose schizophrenic

If he ever talks about it, which he hardly ever does, he'll usually just say "i need to go home - i cant be around people right now" because he can slip into periods where doesn't recognize anyone and defaults into hostility - he cant have a license or hold a job, and lives off disability.

Sometimes he'll tell us about shit that he sees, by asking us if we see it. Naturally, we don't, and he gets real quiet and embarrassed

They are not strictly insanity, though. They are diagnosed mental disorders. "Insanity" is not any specific disorder, it's just an umbrella term used to denote behaviors that deviate from the norm, regardless of the reason.

I think a spiral is a pretty good metaphor for certain kinds of insanity.

You keep running down paths of a halfway reasonable logic/philosophy, and you keep on doing it constantly until it is the only thing you believe in and you gradually contort everything you perceive to fit that mold, while rejecting any direct contradiction to that worldview. It's like an extremely aggressive confirmation bias.
>>

That dude that kidnapped and ate kids?
>>
>>342068727
They're mental disorders that would mean you're insane.

When people are excused from crimes due to being insane, it's not because they're free thinkers. It's because they're insane.

Itchy tasty was the only one of these that ever felt real to me, because it included reasons for the guy to be housebound (since the facility was on lockdown) and wasn't just 'guy talking about his impending demise' since he didn't actually know what the T virus was going to do to him. Also avoided the 'writing right up until the moment of death' BS many such journals fall into.

>>342068927
Insanity is not a clinical term. You cannot be diagnosed as "insane", it will always be some form of disorder or behavioral deviancy. I'm not saying that an insane person is a free thinker, just that their behavior goes against established behavioral norms and is thus deemed deviant.

He has roommates - they make sure he takes his meds, renews his meds, and doesn't do dumb shit without realizing it. Hes big into a number of hobbies, and that keeps him focused. We all kinda decided that he can't live alone (he tried, almost killed himself twice).
>>
>>342069321
Right, but when you say "deemed" you make it seem like insanity is some sort of social construct that doesn't have any meaning.

The truth is, unless you're engaging in behavior that's harmful to you or others, you won't be deemed insane.

That probably wasn't it.
Actual serious plot spoilers ahead.

Librom himself was literally the author of the journal, as in the sorcerer you were reading about transformed himself into a monster book to pass down his story and power. He does cry a lot, though. Just not on his own pages.

I'm not saying that at all. My point is that insanity is just a term for deviant behavior/thoughts and thus cannot "feel" like anything.

A specific mental disorder however, can be concretely defined and the feelings it causes in the sufferer can be described.

My nephew hates it. He just wants to do the same things as normal kids and not get made fun of all the time. But he can't understand why he's different. Leads to a lot of resentment exacerbated by him having a hard time separating his out of nowhere conclusions from observations grounded in reality. His life sucks.

Metroid Prime 2 had a few of these, but I think it was implied they were actually audio logs or transcriptions of them.

>Brouda lost the bet, so he switched watch duty with me. I figure this section is nice and safe and boring, which suits me just fine. Let those other pugs guard the hot zone, I... hold on... hey! ...No! Hel--(transmission ends)

>I'm the only one left. Managed to get out of the hive, but when I got to the ship, everyone was gone... dead. I'm heading for that alien building we saw earlier. Maybe someone can help me there... Wait, something's moving down there. Hello...?

The Luminoth and Pirate logs were fantastic, though.

I like Amnesia's journal entries that are all by you and show your descent into madness and becoming a monster (metaphorically), but since you have AMNESIA and thus don't have the memories to make you crazy, it's more of finding out the mystery of finding out why the fuck you're here and why you wrote all this shit.
>>
I remember i played the demo for that Modernvania 3DS game and right as you enter the castle there's a journal or something of a knight trying to storm the castle. It details his fight with a monster up to right before the monster dealt the final blow.

I don't know what's worse. Knowing you're insane, or not knowing you're insane.

On one hand you're very aware that at any moment you could slip and hurt the people around you or yourself, potentially never recover.

On the other hand, bad things keep happening to you, but you're probably too dazed or unaware of your actions you probably only feel constant dread and fear.

I think the worst would be knowing you'll eventually slip into insanity or a mental state inferior to your current one, unable to recognize even your own thoughts, still alive but dead in all aspects. Alzheimer seems to be the worst for that. Flowers for Algernon comes to mind, I tired putting myself in that role and could only feel existential dread.

I like to imagine in a lot of games like this that there is actually someone trolling me like two rooms ahead. Some guy is just avoiding the spooks, and writing troll notes.

I like to imagine that in Dark Souls that a much faster guy is ahead of my in the dungeons, lighting all of those convenient torches, and not using any bonfires.

It's not exactly "insane"... but being aware of anxiety is pretty bad... especially when you're the kind of person that gets anxiety over just showing that you have anxiety problems.

So what's usually already an extreme attention to detail in an attempt to prevent any sort of risk doubles in on itself to make sure that people don't know that you're doing it.

Some of the anxiety attacks I've had ended up being so much worse than they would've been just because someone else was around when I started freaking out about something... even if that person leaves.

Little known fact is most people know they are going to die 5 minutes before it happens. Most people don't realize it however. This guy though, he was a professional scribe, his mind was sharp and trained. He could detect the death pulse 5 minutes before he would die or perhaps even as high as ten minutes. Since he knew for sure he would die instead of futilily trying to defend himself he made use of his remaining time to write as much as he could in his journal. A friend of mine kinda solved this problem. He hangs out with a motivation coach-turned his friend and whenever he starts freaking out he asks the coach does he see it to. If the coach says no he's just like " okay whatever " because he has absolute and complete trust in him.
Also I think a degree of stoicism would help rationalize the mental problems insane people face.

One of the ways I can tell I'm near having a seizure is that I stop being able to understand written or spoken language, which means I often have time to lie down and let the moment pass (or at least stop myself from smashing my head on the floor by dropping like a brick).

I had a really bad day I while back where I kept phasing in and out of the weird moments, so I started typing up a page of whatever I was thinking about while it happened.

Alright, here it goes. I'm pretty sure I invented a few words during this.

1/2:

>I'm having some kind of repeated mindwipe thing, feels like thinkening to his swatch my ability to understand written and/or spoken language is alternating between normal and 'holy shit I have no idea what's happening right now'.
>I'm just cooled ticking to the swatch to feels look sculled to like... I don't know where I was going with this. Like I said, it's changing pretty frequently today. It's a lot worse than usual.
My head feels like it's got a blood pressure WAY higher than it should be. I'm feeled that mah intended my hospital to they take my blood pressure but only AFTER I've had a fucking seizure. That's useless. It's like saying "We should be looking out for squads of enemies!" after your platoon has been ambushed into to' smash incalled and has been shot to pieces.
>I think I need to convince a hospital to get me a blood pressure measuring thing (I don't know what they're called, shut up) and let me take it home. That way, I can take my blood pressure while this horseshit is happening. I can feel that the blood vessels in my nose and throat are inflated, and my heart rate is way higher than it thushed (caught into flashed into loss). I want to be able to talk about this at some time when my brain isn't trying to fucking kill itself.
>Maybe I should print this off and show it to my GP? That would work.

>Been absolurated into, my nose is really fucking annoying right now. I mentioned it earlier, but the increased blood pressure is making it run constantly. If I was out somewhere rather than just at home, I’d be unable to talk to anyone for more than a minute or so, and blowing my nose the whole time. It’s like having a fever.

>I think I’m just going to go to sleep. As far as I know, it’s the only way I’m going to get my heart/brain to stop going into overdrive. If I stay like this, I’ll either have another seizure inbeating [< -- I don’t know where that was going] or just fall asleep due to running out of energy. I only woke up like 2 hours ago! This is bullshit.
