Man that shit would be cool; I was considering going more towards the feel of a saturday morning cartoon, like Medabots, with camp and color over top of a deep customization system and solid team-building mechanics.
I thought what made Custom Robo really cool (and was something that Gotcha Force lacked) was having a plot that was just chewy enough to make you feel like getting into fights and doing plot related stuff; so I was thinking of creating some kind of dynamic plot, where (in addition to a basic story) arcs would be generated or could be entered whenever the player ran out of things to do.
No more missions? Bam, join a tourney. Tourney over? Evil bot invasion! Evil bots not your thing? Training arc of some kind, fuck if I know.

that's not a plot, that's a fucking outline.
The characters have personalities. Even the nameless NPC's have personalities. One-off joke NPC's get slightly different sprites, etc. There's some pretty clever dialogue in there.

I would run a Swift with Afterburner Gun and pop-up type bombs and sats to go sprinting from cover to cover. It's been so long I don't remember the specifics, but it was a good strat.

Going for the kids-with-toys approach is always fine if you don't make it dreadfully boring like Arena. It needs a good amount of originality to stand out, or else why play it if it's been seen before? Custom Robo on the gamecube stood out a little as, rather than kids-with-toys, even bounty hunters used them... for whatever reason
