Dreamcast wouldn't have failed, Sega would have stayed a major competitor for at least one more generation, and Xbox may not have ever come into fruition as a result of this.

Microsoft would be much stronger than it is now. There would be little to no competition in the west, and they most likely would not have made the same bad PR moves. Being in control means they would take less risks to stay in control, and the always online thing was a risk in an attempt to take control. It was a bad read.

This is a strange scenario since sony entered the console market years before microsoft did, partly as a fuck you to nintendo for going to the trouble of developing the snes cd add on only for nintendo to drop it because they couldn't control the content on it like the tyrants of the console market they were back in the day.
Microsoft entered the console market because they saw dollar signs and no other reason, and japanese game developers saw the xbox for what it was, a cash grab with no passion, when microsoft tried to appeal to japanese game devs.
They didn't buy into it then, and if nintendo was their only other choice they would have went to the cube instead of the xbox.
It would have only appealed to westerners like it does now, except without sony to compete with it and nintendo taking all of the games that would have gone to the ps2, it would have been the already nintendo giant becoming even stronger and absolutely stomp out the xbox without remorse.

6th gen would have looked and ran better for starters.
The Wii wouldn't have happened and by extension neither would the Wii U because they wouldn't be splitting one market three ways and have to head for a new market.
Microsoft would be on the same path, but online would suffer because PSN is the holding pen for people who don't speak English.
SEGA may have put out another system before going third party, but probably not.

Vita's problem was Sony failed to recognize that the PSP only got the support that it did because developers were making games that the DS wouldn't suitably play, while they themselves were trying to make it the Dudebro portable.
