It gets fun once you get the grail and complete the first few areas.
It stops being fun again once the areas become ridiculously interconnected and you have to do a bunch of bullshit just to make a slight amount of progress, and are reduced to either wasting a bunch of time or just saying "fuck it" and looking up a guide.

The remake is fine, don't listen to the people telling you you need to play the original.
A lot of people got really attached to the MSX graphics and music. Style preferences aside, the sprites in the remake are arguably more readable and theres a handful of quality of life changes to the gameplay.
If you end up liking the game, check out the original, but it's by no means the version you NEED to play.

I got to the Tower of the Goddess before I just flat out gave up on the game. Believe me when I say I love this game, but holy shit, it really is way too brutal for a casual like me. The puzzles are quite bullshit, often a tablet found on one end of the game contains a hint that's tangentially related to some puzzle 30 screens away.
So you end up trying everything on everything like in a LucasArts point and click, except that there are an order of magnitude more possibilities.
There is a hint related walkthrough on Steam that can get you through the most bullshit riddles, but prepare to be frustrated if you don't want to look up everything which kind of defeats the purpose anyway.

There's also a number of onetime puzzles in the game, I highly suggest you be careful regarding them - even entering the room of one such puzzle counts as an attempt.
