Persona 3 and 4 are great. There's no reason to wait for P5 to get into the series if you're new. And considering how long P3 and 4 are it'll fill time before P5 comes out.

If you'd like to experience the games, for the sake of the experience then you can do the following:
If you have a Vita purchase Persona 3 Portable, and Persona 4 Golden
If you don't have a Vita, purchase a Playstation TV they are on clearance for 20 or 30 dollars at Walmart. Then download Persona 3 Portable off the PSN store and get Persona 4 Golden physically; since the PStv plays most of the Vita library.

If you want games with okay RPG mechanics and shitty randomly generated dungeons, and is filled with social stuff that's better done in VNs, start with 3 or 4. Or just 4, because the AI is going to piss you off in 3, unless you play P3P. If you want some actual dungeon crawling JRPGs, play Persona 1 and 2 and/or SMT. Not him, but I don't know what other reason there is to play them. The first two I get, they're classic dungeon crawlers, but Persona 3 and 4 are more social sim than anything, and the social elements are as basic as you can get. There are much better things to play if you want social sims or dating sims. As for the RPG elements, they're not that good either, so I don't really know why people play them.

I enjoy the time management, I enjoy the dungeon crawling, I enjoy collecting and fusing Personas and I enjoy the daily life elements as a contrast to all the combat. I also like the characters.
The story I don't really pat attention to because it's a JRPG.
