This OP actually happened to me with pokemon though.
I played pokemon ever since I was little with the original rby. I traded pokemon from rse all the way up to X and Y. All my shinies and legendaries from all those years all in X and Y, lots of memories stored there.
Then, last year, some shit stole my 3DS games and Wii U games (they left the consoles and everything else oddly enough) and I lost all my pokemon from the past 16 years or so.
I haven't played a pokemon game since.
