Char was a pretty boring character until Zeta and Char's Counterattack. The only moments in 0079 where he was particularly noteworthy were when he betrayed Garma and much later when he betrayed the rest of the Zabi family. Ral, despite having significantly less screentime, was characterised far better and was a much more compelling "villain" than Char ever was. As far as 0079 goes at least.

If you want well written shit for Gundam, there's basically only manga, cause anime will never be well written for Gundam. That's just a fundamental rule since time immemorial.
Anything by Ark Performance basically makes sense of all the plot holes and fills in all the character gaps. It's insane how competent they make even the most random ass officers who would otherwise just durp around in 0079 before getting killed by Amuro or his friends.
I'd highly recommend it, plus it's drawn gorgeously.

0079 was so amazing to me because I thought I was going into a mindless kid's show for laughs, but I was honestly surprised how much depth the series had and cool it was. I expected at least that or more from Zeta. The first few episodes were promising but it slowly devolved into drivel.

That's mainly because Tomino for whatever reason (ask /m/ for details) decided to make a really depressing out take on Gundam. I agree it basically does a 180 on 0079, but on it's own it's still alright.

Super Hal is a joke, he could barely shit on people in S1 and Setsuna basically did better, lasted longer, and had to fight harder opponents.
Hal is a hype train that never delivers, because there's no room for it. The Word of God already stated ages ago after 00 ended that Prince Ali followed by Papa Bear were canonically the most superior pilots skill wise in the story, and in the case of the former he literally has the highest on-screen hit accuracy shot by shot, panel by panel.
Hal was actually ranking at the top of CB as far as on-screen performances go until Trans-Am came along and Setsuna can just bumrush everyone down thereby no need to actually aim his rifle, and by S2 Setsuna was consistently better than even Hal+Al, but that's probably cause of 00 Raiser.
Either way, it's pure hype, and the guy never delivers for whatever reason, nor does Word of God ever claim Hal or Hal+Al were the best pilots or even came close to being the best pilot. What you gonna do?
00 was simply a hot bed for people who were hyped to be hot shit, and naturally almost everyone failed to put out as a result.

Yeah, now compare when a one eyed sober Irish-man was taking down GN-Xs like nothing without TRANS-AM when he previously had literally less than a 20% on screen hit rate across 20+ episodes only to up his accuracy to over 80% (the highest point across both seasons by the way) using dual pistols against the #1 pilot and his funnels all cause he's angry.
Hal got some of the coolest moments, choreographically, but when it comes to objective results, the studio just shafted him hard, and based on who he fights in S2 and shit, he basically is confirmed for being just another special snowflake in a fucking squad of special snowflakes, making him not so special.
But don't worry, he's still better than MUH VEDA at all times, and is better than Irish and Irish 2 at all times besides when they fight the terrorist, at which point they magically power up and become the best pilots. Actually on that point their accuracy against other terrorists (like the mudslime terrorists mind you not A-Laws) is also rather high, but I chalk that up to the terrorists usually consisting of construction robots.
Setsuna ironically has the best CB stats, whether it's melee, or using his gun. You'd think the sniper would take the cake for accuracy, but that is not the case.
