They're not shitty but they're not great either. A lot of their more recent games are perfectly enjoyable if you're into the style even though they aren't exactly great. Hell even some licensed shit is more enjoyable than it has any right to be, like the DS Thor game. Contra 4 is the only great game they made. If only Double Dragon Neon was half as good of a throwback.

>Pirate Curse was REALLY good though.

50% of the game time consists of backtracking to do some boring fetch quest, it gets really absurd near the end where it asks you to track down every last pirate demon in the game. Yet while having this incredibly tedious stuff the game does not feature enough navigtion short cuts.

The bosses are a joke. If you drink a mega monster milk, use a super spike ball than you can knock off all their health in one combo. The enemies themself pose no challenge. There are check points every 5th room and the biggest fucking challenge are the puzzles, which should not stump you for more than 30 seconds.

The metroidvania stuff feels tacked on as there is very little to explore and around 75% of the collectables are mandatory to complete the game.

The game is designed poorly. The backdash is fucking usless in Pirate's curse. The pistol deals so little damage it's only good for the enemies that already have 1 hp. The down thrust and 400 coin kick attack do not do enough damage to matter compared to just upgrading the basic attack. You've essntially got 1 attack for the entire game, no alternative weapons, no real resources to manage, no special moves worth using except as travel powers.

Was this your first platformer or something?

Feels like the game would have been better off if they gave you all the powers you unlock and designed linear stages around said powers. Once you get the boots and hat it feels like the game's about to truly begin and throw some good challenges at you but it just ends.

The thing is that locking away abilities in a metroid like game is supposed to create a sense of adventure where you are constantly rediscovering old areas and finding new things about them. Shante doesn't do this. You get a new ability, check the map to see which island has an undisocvered item, retrace your steps and go to the big red block, destroy it and it's done. It never feels like anything is hidden or discovered. Contrast that with a Metroid game where everything is hidden and you are constnatly discovering new paths to traverse between old zones, this makes revisists feel like discovery rather than a choir. Because you are trained to look out for fake walls, hidden paths, etc. You feel that every new screen you scroll has hidden potential even if you've walked over it 3 times before. Or in a Zelda game dungeons can be tackled in different orders, you may even leave a dungeon after getting the special item: skipping the boss and half the place. Only once you get to the very last stage does the game tell you that you need the sacred object each boss has.

Shante's level design isn't good enough to do this and they don't have enough content to make a big world to explore. You can tell this by how much they need to pad the game out to make it so it doesn't end in 2 hours, which is about what it would be without the fetch quests.

I think making the game a series of linear levels would be better in theory but if you look at the history of sidescrollers the West has never been good at level design. Contra, Metal Slug, Metroid, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Mario, Ghosts and Goblins, Megman: all the good level design is from the East.

The strength of Shante is it's Spritework, it's good enough to take a sub-mediocre game and make it into a decent gaming experience. If the sprite work was worst I don't think the games would sell well.

In terms of superior level design & combat: Pharo Rebirth+ and Reveria under the moonlight are better.

>>
>>342035338
The best level design does come from the east but I don't think it's fair to completely dismiss western game level design since it isn't the 90's anymore. Games like Volgarr The Viking, Freedom Planet, Cloudbuilt and Shovel Knight demonstrate that the west is perfectly capable of making good levels. Hell, Wayforward themselves did a pretty good job with Contra's level design and although that game is much more simple mechanically it still shows that they can create challenging, tight levels if they want to.

>>

>>
>>342035838
Have fun with them. Just a heads up that if you are not good at platformers Reveria's hard mode is going to wake you up, your health is like classic games where it's only about 4 hits or so to live.

Also if you havn't played them Super Metroid and it's sequals and the Iga-vanias are manditory playing, they are still the gold for the genre. Metroid, especially Super Metroid does exploration and atmisphere better than anything, you genuinally feel like you are lost on an alien planet. Igavanias are the gold standard for combat with later games in the series having an absurd 100+ different spells and 10+ different families of weapons to play with in addition to the usual toybox of movement powers and gimmicks.

In terms of linear level design, that award always goes to linear platformers, by design linear games are just better paced and can impose much greater challenges: like Rondo of Blood, Mega Man X, Super Ghosts and Goblins, Ninja Giadne 3, Super Contra, Contra Hardcorps, and Hardcorps Uprising are some of the best.

>Wayforward themselves did a pretty good job with Contra's level design
You mean the game that just copy pasted old contra levels? The only new mechanic being a fucking gimmick hook that slows down pacing? Level designed fucked up by having enemies literally hidden in the cracks between the screen?
Pathetic. Take a look at Hard Corps uprising to see how real Contra games are made: that one is actualyl one of the most mechanically complex platformers ever made.

>Games like Volgarr The Viking, Freedom Planet, Cloudbuilt and Shovel Knight demonstrate that the west is perfectly capable of making good levels.

More like they demonstrate that they are still a joke. You didn't name a single good game. Do you honestly think that austetistic digging in Shovel Knight constitutes "good level design?" Have you never in your life played a platformer with decent passing? All of those games are just piles of mechanics, environments, and ideas that had been hundreds of times before, often mechanically better and with better looking aestetics.

I'll make this blunt, unless you have played all the classics from the past, the good A+ games you would have no reason to bother with something like Freedom Planet, which is the best of the games you mentioned and something even I who HAS played every platformer known to man didn't bother with for more than an hour.

> I just don't really follow indie stuff.
"Indie" is all garbage. The West can't make platformers. What I do is this. I go on steam every once in a while and check for platformers with japanese audio. If you do this you will find that the list of games steam shows is much better. You will either Jap goods, which are much better, or high budget Western games that could afford a translation job as opposed to the normal turds that show up when you search for platformers.

There might be one or two decent platformers without Japanese audio but I am not going to shift through 300+ turds of indie crap to find them.

>>342038009
Level design has to do with enemy and terrain placement. Hard corps is a rush of excitment where you are constantly zigging and zagging through enemies specifically designed to inflict maximum challenge.

In contrast something like igavania's just have enemies randomly placed in a maze and you can easily kill most of them before they get off an attack with the right weapon, or if they do get off an attack you press the backdash. The only good level design in those games are the bosses. Igavanias are toybox games, the fun is playing with the billion different attacks, the actual level design is mediocre and sometimes outright dull.

>You mean the game that just copy pasted old contra levels?

Only visually, the levels are made from the ground up with some references here and there. The dual screen gimmick actually did add some depth to the navigation, for instance the city level actually has several routes of varying speeds/difficulties and having that "soft" punishment for falling down is nice. Wish I could comment on Hard Corps Uprising but I can't play it unfortunately. All I know is that compared to the Contra games I did play (1/Super C (both console and arcade), 3, Hard Corps, Shattered Soldier and Rebirth) it has very solid design. Especially compared to 3, Hard Corps and SS which are just shitty boss rushes.

>Do you honestly think that austetistic digging in Shovel Knight constitutes "good level design?"

Shovel Knight isn't even close to being the best game on my list, but its level design is consistently entertaining because of how many gimmicks it goes through, and there is some nice depth if you want to speedrun the game with the various shortcuts you can take. Volgarr The Viking and Cloudbuilt both have far better level design than Shovel Knight and FP. And while Volgarr is generic (although still better than its closest comparison, Super GnG which completely underutilizes its double jump and somehow has worse platforming than its predecessors while also being sparse as fuck and having autoscroller segments), Cloudbuilt is entirely unique. There are no games like it japanese or western. It manages to transition precision platforming into full 3D while also making it all flow incredibly well in the process.

Also I've played every single game you've mentioned with the exception of Contra Hard Corps. Hell, chances are I did it more than you did.
>>
>>342040724
> Hard corps is a rush of excitment where you are constantly zigging and zagging through enemies specifically designed to inflict maximum challenge.

What maximum challenge? The actual levels, you know, the things in between boss fights, are not challenging in the slightest. Nor are they engaging, the game just throws enemies from both sides of the screen with practically no real platforming, obstacles or thought to speak of. Which is fine since that's not what the game's focus is, but bringing it up as some kind of example of great level design is dishonest.

>>342041349
I guess it's a matter of sementics whether you want to say that enemy placement is level design or combat.

I think it's level design because the enemies are contained within the level, while combat refers to the abilities the player has.

Even ignoring this there is a lot of stuff in terms of level interaction in Hard Corps: You can climb walls, run up them , hang on wires. There is platforming in it, it's just mixed in with the combat, you jump around all the time to travel or avoid damage.

Contra is both a run n gun and a platformer

I liked their take on a Boy and His Blob, as well as LIT and Batman Brave and the Bold. They're hit & miss, I agree on that.

>Yeah Im gonna name you a bunch of games
Do it.

I seriously doubt anyone can even remember the name of most Western platformers from those previous consoles. What does it say about the game's quality if they are not worth remembering?

The worst is that I don't even disagree with him overall it's just that he's being needlessly hyperbolic while dismissing the very few genuinely good western platformers

They are not bad. The graphic work in them was very good and there were no outstanding problems. The main problem was that the games were piss easy, you essentially had unlimited lives and check points were really close togeather. The levels seemed to spend half the time just throwing free shit at you rather than providing some sort of challenge. It also didnt help that a lot of the crap they through at you is not even real power ups but some collectable that does nothing when you get it. In other words they were casual games but at least they were well done and had very pretty graphics. That's really not saying that they encroach on the Jap's terriority of making good platformers.

and You have not met my challenge. I wanted a good western platformer made for every major system.

Remember when Shantae threads were nice? It was when we didn't have them daily, actually talked about the games, and didn't just dump lewd pics, pat each other on the back and say "gee Half Genie Hero looks good"

Do not sexualize the Shantae.

It looks less like mermaids and more like big lipped guppies trying to eat those girls.

Because what you described is closer to the truth. It's a fake mermaid factory attaching fish to girls.

May as well go PC for higher resolution options. I doubt the Wii U version will have features that make it worth playing over PC if you have both available.

Never heard of this game before. I'm guessing it's another metroid type game worth looking into?
