I remember old gaming magazines used to call it the PSX (Not sure why, probably to sound cool or some shit), and I think that's where many got the name from. I've always called it the PlayStation or PS1, because that's what it is.

Because it was originally called the PlayStation eXperiment, and abbreviated PS-X, and later PSX by magazines.
SCEA even pushed for it to be officially named PSX in North American territories as the PSX name was already widely known and used by magazines at the time, and they felt the name 'PlayStation' was too weird and not hip enough and wouldn't sell (Japan declined their suggestion, citing the Walkman's great success overseas despite its name).
