that game's not a product of the industry. It's enthusiasts, having access to tools that used to be prohibitively expensive not long ago. For every 9 shitstains like that there's a gem out there, that would have been impossible a decade ago, not because we didn't have the tech, but because a smart and creative person couldn't afford it. Embrace the shit games. Don't play them, maybe point and laugh, if it makes you feel better. But embrace them, as a side effect of a developer environment that gives you the really cool shit.
>>
>>342010637
Pretty much. People also tend to be unaware of how many publisher-funded big games get cancelled for variety of reasons. Or how many simply never get past the initial publisher pitch. Ask Obsidian, they know all about that.

I should probably mention Crookz. It doesn't really do well when you compare it to the commandos games. The levels and mechanics are far simpler than in the commandos games and i think that it suffers from that you can't knock out enemies and take over the maps as you could in the commandos games. But it is still fun enough and worth a look. I only wish that they would have made the maps a bit more interesting and filled them with more than a ton of switches.

Third games is absolute trash, Commandos 2 is without a doubt the pinnacle of the series.

If you want more, check out the Destination Paris mod for Commmandos 2, it's effectively a whole new game. re-purposed maps with completely new layouts, commandos, patrols objectives etc, new /re-worked abilities, weather plays a far greater role in the maps....and the difficulty is turned allllllllll the way up.

Really? I always thought Destination Berin got unjust shit because people didn't like jump to 3D which made locations more confusing. I would need to replay it before confirming that opinion because it's been over ten years since I played it.

I don't think that they are truly hard it is just that they call for a slow and methodical playstyle. The thing that i really like about the games is how you are put into these large maps full of enemies but by taking it slow and pulling off one goal at the time you start to take over the entire map.
>>
>>342011474
>>342012542
Haven't played the series in a long time, but I didn't think of C3 as trash. It was a lot more difficult and it felt like the map design funneled you through a specific route, but overall I still enjoyed it. C2 is by far the best though.

And that fucking level.
>>
>>342012441
it's even crazier when you realize you can actually enter all those buildings and they have their own internal maps. shit, that submarine shipyard building would've probably been its own level in a lesser game.

There's no denying that the vast majority of the gaming industry is producing shit.
>>
>>342013438
I've always wanted to play it. I can't remember which one it was, but the tutorial mission has you getting off of a small raft and trying to take over this area with a lighthouse. I couldn't even make it to land without all four of my commandos dying. It's late 90's gaming at it's best.
>>
>>342013120

The jump to 3D didn't bother me, it was the gross oversimplification of everything, levels became far, far smaller and down right linear at times, the player was afforded far less freedom with how they wanted to achieve objectives and the overall level of interactivity was dismal, commandos had fewer abilities, removal of hotkeys in favour of having to click shitty icons on the hud to do everything, a huge emphasis on making it more of an "action" focused game, rather than stealth and strategy.

It's hands down the worst the series has to offer.
>>
>>342013862
>There's no denying that the vast majority of the gaming industry is producing shit.
indeed, there isn't, and nobody is. All people are saying is that the ability to produce insane amount of shit directly includes the ability to produce gold, if you care. Back when developing was expensive and complicated, only few people did it. They were always professionals, and did it to survive, which puts a bit of a lower bound on quality, but also on risk taking and experimental freedom. Nowadays everybody, including you and me, can do games. That means most of it will be utter shit, orders of magnitude worse than the most vile shit you can imagine. It also means the few cool dudes that really had a good idea and dedication, and couldn't do games before, can do them now. They'll be hard to find, under all the layers of shit, but you're on /v/. Someone will find cool stuff, post it, and word of mouth spreads.

Slightly different genre's, but for anyone that's enjoyed the Commandos series...

Door Kickers is excellent, worth every cent, tons of content, more of top down SWAT game than Commandos, but really enjoyable.

The Masterplan, pirate it and wait to see how development progresses, has a lot of potential, is pretty solid but could use a little refinement. More of an emphasis on controlling hairy situations rather than methodically disposing of threats, tense as fuck and very rewarding.

The same reason all good games die,

the developer didn't make enough money because everybody just pirated their game so they went back to being a full time doctor or lawyer.

The Diver was a fucking beast. in some missions you could find enough knives for him to take out a three man patrol silently, that combined with his grappling hook, scuba gear.......there was no where and nothing he couldn't do.

Lupin/Thief was always my favourite though, swinging around on power lines, climbing fucking anything and everything, full fucking ninja mode.

>>
>>342017996
One of their major problems was production value. They were b-movie tier. But yes, filming people to act as sprites in photographic environments does not work. The modern mocap approach is disgusting, but sadly more functional. Of course the best solution is just not to blindly attempt photorealism, and instead make a good game
>>
>>342010110
To be fair anon, that's usually not the developer being pretentious, it's that it's stupidly easy to do, and can be done on a small team that doesn't have the budget for a proper artist.

>>342018571
problem is that they are victim of the fallacy that this style is "easier". It's not historic, and it's missing aspects that are absolutely vital at this detail level. As a result it does not look like an hommage, it does not look retro, it just looks bad. Same as with devs doing retro pixel shit (shit to distinguish it from rare but existent pixel art). If you're at the point that you're considering selling your game, consider hiring people to clean them up. Even if you stick to old school style, hire people that know their shit about old school style

c'mon you can do better than that, I would have thought by now you'd have some decent material, what with all the neetbucks you've spent on being a virgin recluse

What does /v/ think of Robin Hood?
>>
>>342023478
cool dude, takes from the productive people in society and gives to people in neet

I think I also played a demo mission of that. It was a seriously fuckhuge map where your guys started out in a town crawling with guards, and you had to get them through it, past a forest also crawling with guards, and have the spy disguise himself and drive off with a Nazi officer way on the other side. I couldn't even comprehend how to do that since the officer gets picked up by his actual driver after about 20 minutes and you lose.

it's a commandos style game, only that you play as robin hood in the middle ages. It's missions are more non linear. It's very fun if you like the genre
>>
>>342023607
the aristocrats surely were the most productive people in feudal society
>>
>>342024356
their money and insane demands kept the economy running, just like today. Besides, I needed an opposite for neets, and figured successful bakers and blacksmiths aren't exactly poor, so they're legitimate targets for robin's hood

You were supposed to kill the guy and he escapes if you cause an alarm outside the first area.

I remember taking the car with spy so he couldn't enter it and when he tried to run I fucked him up with the tank's turret.

No, robin hood wasn't a commie, he only attacked the people who took taxes unlawfully.

>>342027124
that's what his friends claimed anyway

such a great game, loved the levels.
And great unusual settings for WW2 games.

I had a dodgy pirated version of commandos 1, I could not save at all. I began to give up during the African missions but suddenly reached a kind of zen videogame enlightenment and beat the rest of the game easily with no saves

Anyone else nostalgia over the dam mission on the demo disks? I can still hear the dynamite ticking
>>
Thanks for reminding me about these games. I had forgotten I bought them a few months ago, and had beaten them as a kid. Reinstalling as we speak.

I think Bethesda just struck gold with their TES formula and haven't moved since aside from simplifying said formula with each new installment. You seriously have to wonder what they do during development.

>wouldn't you ay company of heroes is similar to commandos, well the combat. it is kind of influenced by it.

Not really. Games like Commandos, Desperados, etc should really be their own RTT/puzzle genre of some kind.
