Yes but the combat is all item based and attacks are consumable, which actually make it mmore worth while to skip fights and save your attacks for non-skippable fights. It's like a fucking monkey paw with this series.

The polls didn't ask what the least important thing in a PM game was, it asked what the MOST enjoyable part of SPM was, and those fucking morons in japan said the gimmicky 2d/3d shift thing, which they fucking dropped anyway. There was no "what is least important" poll. The quote states that "Less than 1% said story was the most important." They were trying to phase out story and original content in mario games at the time, and spun the poll results in that interview to their favor.
