When does this get good exactly? I'm at Ruan and bored to tears. Nothing interesting whatsoever is happening in the story, just a bunch of local disputes in generic medieval towns one after another. The two main characters are as boring as they come. You could say that it is realistic that two kids who play hero will stop thieves and shit like that instead of saving the world but man this shit is so boring. Other than that, the writing in this game is kinda weird to me, everything is overworded and overly polite, it just gets on my nerves. Maybe it's too accurate to the japanese original with all their honorifics and overpoliteness?
The combat system is also complete trash. It had potential for strategy and fun but it's just too boring and simplistic. Most enemies die in a couple of hits from your normal attacks, I barely ever use magic and tech other than Joshua's double slash (which kills enemies in one turn when they mostly take two turns to go down). Magic is completely useless because it almost always takes two turns to fire and in two turns you can kill the enemy with two normal attacks. Also the music is dogshit, seriously, what the fuck were they thinking with that shit?
Man this game is just complete garbage. The second one really has to live up to the hype to recover from this fucking trainwreck. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to complete this.

I do this as well, but in this game they have nothing interesting to say. Compare it with the dialogues you get talking to npcs in Grandia or Xenogears. In those games the Npcs have conversations with your party members or say interesting things. 99% of npcs in trails say things like "man my husband is always working" or "I'm hungry!".

I think you can really see the cheap localisation when they're having dialogue that should be compressed into standard English spread out across multiple text boxes because that's how it appeared in the original.

For all its praise around here the game is a rather niche title. If you don't like it, drop it, and don't dwell on it.
The fanbase is just very dedicated to spreading its popularity because the whole series wasn't even translated until a few years ago, now we're getting the 2 newest entries to the series, we got the sequel to Trails and now we're getting the third installment of Trails in the Sky translated aswell, which is kind of a miracle since sales weren't even good enough to warrant another translation for it.
I've enjoyed the game from the start, in a relaxing kinda way, but around Ruan was the point where I actually got invested into things. If you're kinda enjoying it but want things to pick up slightly, play a little longer. If you hate it then by all means drop it and don't force yourself though it because its "/v/-core" or something.

I like everything you dislike about this game. Honestly, I think that's how JRPGs go. The reason I was so absorbed in the games was because the story was so down-to-earth. And the characters being reasonable makes dialogue enjoyable without anyone acting like a retard. Second Chapter is more focused in the overarching plot and I think it suffers because of it.

I think this is because of the difficulty setting. Higher modes are the complete opposite to the point that it's a problem.

When the actual truth is that this is just simply a very generic rpg about a kingdom and its people issues. It gets to a point where those kind of world destroying plots becomes more evident, but it is VERY SLOW. That's why people like it for the most part, you vist around the kingdom so much, you almost become familiar with the people and their lives. And let me tell you, every single npc lives its own world if you bother chatting with him everytime.

I feel you, OP. I love JRPGs, I'm fine with slow burns and worldbuilding, but Trails totally failed to hook me. I was still really early and I may have found myself enjoying it if I stuck with it but there was nothing urging me to boot up the game to find out. No engrossing combat, no unique setting, no engaging questions or mysteries.

Everything is "overworded" because that's how people actually converse in real life. There's a lot less dialogue left implied compared to other JRPGs, for better or worse.

Combat system isn't much fun though, I'll give you that. In both FC and SC, normal difficulty is more or less as you described. Hard is the opposite, and it boils down to everyone spamming basic spells and Aerial.
