You can tri and quad wield in Bravely Second
Why not a three man sword?
>>341967261
Was this actually used I always wonder? Isn't it actually quite stupid all an all? For sure you want a shield, no?
>>341967739
That's not what I had in mind, but that seems pretty cool. I wonder if there's a picture of someone actually trying a quad wield, just because, like, how do you hold two swords in one hand?

Big Sword > Tiny Shield

Normal Size Sword (Fast) + Tiny Shield > Big Sword.
I would imagine anyway.

>Fist of the north star
Somehow I'm not surprised. That looks neat, but it's, I don't know, wouldn't that be difficult to maneuver?
>>341967851
Swords like in ops pic would be ceremonial, I forget the name but they trotted them out in like a parade. It was like the 'town sword'.
Actual 'greatswords' where smaller and used in battle across Europe but where relatively rare. Its argued what roll they served.
Shields fell massively out of use in the late medieval period, if you had plate armour you simply didn't need one and if you where a generic infantryman with munitions half-plate or similar you where most likely in a formation with a big pole-arm. They where still used plenty but compared to most of human pre-gunpowder warfare where shields where a complete staple they where much less common.
>>341968106
Don't think about it too hard, those guys only showed up to get killed anyway.
>>341968180
I suppose I should clarify, by shields 'fell out of use' I mean compared to say the classical period where fucking everyone and there mother would have shields, even the pikemen.

Most of them were, that one's an exception though.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pier_Gerlofs_Donia
"In 1791, Jacobus Kok wrote that above the porticus of the New City Hall of Leeuwarden, two remarkably large swords were found which were said to have belonged to Grutte Pier and Wijerd Jelckama. Donia was noted for the ability to wield this great sword so efficiently that he could behead multiple people with it in a single blow.[19]
Today, a great sword that is said to have belonged to Pier is on display at the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. It measures 2.15 metres (7 ft) in length and weighs about 6.6 kilograms (14.6 lb). Some sources put his height at 7 ft.[20] Pier was alleged to be so strong that he could bend coins using just his thumb, index and middle finger. A huge helmet said to be Grutte Pier's is kept in the town hall of Sneek."
Thats Ortega y Gasset, a Spanish philosopher.

>>341968471
Well yeah, the idea is the make the other guys run using better troops/number/equipment/tactics/archers ect. then the other guys have.
You don't kill them in the clash, you make them piss themselves and run then kill them with your cavalry by hitting them when their disorganized and scared.
>>341967851
That particular sword supposedly belonged to Grutte Pier (who was a bit of a giant).
Then again, very big swords (well, in terms of length, even that one was "just" 6.6kg, a typical greatsword used for combat would be 4kg max and most were closer to 2.5kg-3kg, they're actually not that heavy) were used during the Renaissance, although they effectively were polearms the way they were used (for what exact tactical purpose, it's not known).
>>341967851
With the advancements in plate armour, shields became largely unnecessary and reach is a very big advantage.

>Actual 'greatswords' where smaller and used in battle across Europe but where relatively rare. Its argued what roll they served.
The most common theory I've heard is that they were used in the same battlefield role as a halberd. If you look at the Landsknecht deployment, it seems that the frontlines and flanks of the pike formation had soldiers wielding either halberd or zweihander against enemy pikes.
Another suggested role for the twohander is crowd control and personal guards, again similar to the halberd.

I think this makes more sense, but you gotta remember that people are not pure efficiency machines, I bet a bunch of mercs thought they where hot shit with there big dick greatswords and used them whenever they could.

> I bet a bunch of mercs thought they where hot shit with there big dick greatswords
Absolutely. From the Osprey book I've seen, it seems that it was a matter of personal preference to go with halberd or twohander. And given the boisterous nature of the doppelsoldners and the fact that they paid for their own equipment, so no standard uniform/arms, it is quite probable that you get these attitudes.
There is also the point that in these formation clashes it is usually the superior morale that decides the outcome. So it would actually be an advantage when trying to intimidate the other side.
>>341969386
>I thought they were used to break pike heads.
They were definitely used against the pikes, though I suspect actually breaking the pikes was rare. Much more likely it was enough to deflect enemy thrusts and create openings for your own pikemen beside you. And a zweihander could deflect several pikes with one motion, as illustrated in some spanish tercio depictions.

They didn't, the Phalanx dominated the battlefield for centuries until the Romans improved on it later and developed the Maniple system which allowed greater flexibility and control and eliminated he weakness on uneven terrain the Phalanx had. Prior to this the Greeks were considered the undisputed masters of infantry warfare.

>>341972292
They use 3 hands, duh.
>>341972292
>>341971437
The Phalanx had its obvious weaknesses. You could only go forward, it took forever to set up, and its a disaster of weakness on 3 ends.
Its not like it was some unstoppable maneuver but it works great in its contexts.
I really like this kind of thread.
A bunch of guys appear out of nowhere talking about what kind of weapon would be better in actual battle based on their experiences in games (mainly Dark Souls now).
