The super shotgun was stupid shit more akin to a modern shooter's shotgun that only worked at point blank range. Doom 2 was worse than Doom 3.

The problem isn't the enemy, it's the way it's used. The boss level in episode 3 sucked dick, but the way they did it in DTWID made it fun as shit, and they managed to make use them even in D2TWID.

From the modern controls, you can easily run in and out, making the Super Shotgun useful.
The older controls, you'd at least find times where that Super Shotgun would be useful for when something comes close and you can't get out.

And I just commented on the whole game, the whole game is full of lazy, copypasted arenas with enemy after enemy dumped on you, instead of the labyrinthine levels of the first one. It also overuses monster closets because they were completely careless with the level design.
If you had played both at any point, you immediately would know what I mean by this. You can't do anything other than namedropping maps you copied on some thread because you never touched Doom 2.
I hope the unwarranted attention is worth all the shitposting you're doing.

Of course not, there was the rocket launcher and the plasma gun for when the shotgun or chaincannon weren't cutting it. They added the supershotgun because they felt they had to add new weapons and ran out of ideas.
Same case with the new enemies, that's why they're horribly animated and ill conceived.
They had a lot of trouble getting Romero to go back to work during doom 2, he was too busy acting like a rockstar. That's why it ended up being shit, and Quake ended up being much better.

SSG starts wasting ammo really fast if you're using it on a couple weaker guys, or enemies far away. I still use the regular shotgun sometimes after I get the super sometimes because of that.

You're only really in danger of running out in the early levels, before you've built up a stockpile.
After that you can use the SSG for 80% of the game.

I liked Barrels o' Fun. I thought it had an interesting gimmick.

Doom 2 does have some good level design, it just varies wildly in quality especially compared to Doom 1.

I'd say the best levels of Doom 2 are leagues better than the best levels of Doom 1, but Doom 2 levels get so fucking shitty. Especially I feel like maps 15-25 or maybe it's all of the city maps are just so fucking garbage.

Overall, I think Doom 1 is better as a cohesive whole, while Doom 2 has higher highs in level design but also the lowest of lows.
