Last time I tried ppsspp on my older phone it seemed the emulation was pretty slow, has it improved since then?

The room series is good
Clash Royale is high quality, pretty fun.
Clash of Clans is again high quality, but I can see how some don't like those sorts of games.

Yeah on my phone (gen 1 Moto G) I get a lot of slowdown. But like, Persona 3 works fine. On that phone, many of the games should work. Dunno what you want, but I'd put on FF tactics, tactics ogre, worms open warfare, Persona 3, Wipeout, tekken 6, Valkyrie profile Lenneth...and maybe finally try out crisis core.
I've tried 20 or so various f2p games, they all general suck or have some critical flaw that makes them unplayable to me. I still play Seven Knights though, mainly because I love the art and the game nearly plays itself so I can browse 4chan and feel like I'm doing something production.

I recommend disgaea for psp emulation on a phone. Very easy input
You will have some trouble trying some games like peace walker on a touchscreen.
The port of Dragon Quest 8 works well and looks great. It also runs better than it did when the initial reviews went out. The only problem is that it hasn't gotten the content updates that have gone into the 3DS version.
