A lot of the players were people who really wanted to play citybuilding games, real time tactics games, only played for singleplayer, and people who played for arcade.

MP for most RTS is beyond dead but there are lots with good singleplayer campaigns.
brood war was by far the most popular game of the late 90s
a lot of this had to do with the game being completely toaster proof whereas the trinity of fps games (q3, ut, cs) that came out at the same time, all required a decent machine
bgh and tower defense shit was the only stuff i played with people i knew from high school, no one i knew in real life played fps

OP has the right idea. People who played RTS games for the multiplayer moved on to MOBAs. Nobody liked playing 1v1, anyway.
Those who played RTS for the singleplayer experience moved on to the strategy games created by companies like Creative Assembly, Firaxis, and Paradox games, or sometimes even more citybuilding and resource management games.
Nobody actually wants to play Starcraft or Command & Conquer-like games anymore. There's just better options now.

I really like 1v1 games. I don't get why everyone whines about retarded teammates but no one thinks to just play 1v1. The only two genres I've put time into getting competitive in are fighting games and rts.
