Generally I wouldn't buy Kotor from Steam, I remember it not working very well, i.e CTD's. Get it off GOG, that goes for most "older games"
The restoration mod is also external, just search it up.
Although I like Kotor 2, I will always like the original better, played it like shit when I was younger, however with restoration mod, Kotor 2 is considered a better game, objectively, by the community,

Steam version of 2 got a patch last year on Steam that adds widescreen support, fixes windows 7+ run issues, and generally fixed lots of minor issues. Not to mention workshop supportthat makes modding even easier.
It's the definitive version of the game.
Sadly the first Kotor won't get the same love and is still a hassle to get running well on modern systems regardless of where you buy it from.
