Can we get a God of War easter egg thread going?

>So far I've got the snake in the final shot of the trailer

>The son is wearing Kratos' skirt as a belt

>At the beginning the son is playing with a possible Thor toy?

> The floating ghost type creature after Kratos' battle with the first two assholes

> A Valkyrie looking thing flying in the top left corner of the screen when he goes through the cave after the troll fight

>The deer causes the leaves to change colors I believe.

Anything else? This shit is getting me hype.
>>
Boots of Hermes inside Kratos' house at the beginning
>>
I wish I could be more hype.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
They really need to put out some sort of extended demo footage because that gameplay raised concerns.
>>
Yooo. You're right. Missed that thanks. Barlog pretty much said that the IGN rewind theater only found like 2% of the Easter eggs. Not sure how much of that was hyperbole, but there has to be at least 5 or 6 things that people haven't found yet.
>>
>>341915276
I feel you dude. I'm still having a hard time getting over the Resident Evil 7 complete overhaul of the series. I know I was in the minority, but I loved all of the main entries including 5 and 6. Mercernaries mode especially was my shit. Can't imagine them keeping that mode now.

With that being said, God of war, to me, has far worn out it's welcome. I've played all of the games and I came into Sony's conference pretty much convinced that they couldn't convince me to play another one and somehow they did.
>>
someone post dad_of_war.jpg
>>
>>341915854
>God of war, to me, has far worn out it's welcome
I kind of feel the same way. The formula gets old after 5 games.
I'm okay with the idea of it going a different direction for a new generation, but it has to be executed well, which I don't know if it will be yet.
>>
Judging from his "sons" appearance, it's not his flesh and blood
>>
magic seems to be based on runes
the ax runes glow when ice powers activate
the trolls runes glow when it throws lava
couldn't see because of the angle, but the kid has runes tattooed up his forearm and its the same arm he used to draw the bow string when he shot the lightning bolt

rune collecting here we come!
>>
>>341916472
Yeah. I'm definitely hyped, but I still don't know completely how I feel about it. I just can't see Kratos doing crazy ass air combos into poseidon's rage and double jumping around in this new era. I'll miss that for sure.
>>
>Norse pantheon
Lame

Norse mythology is over saturated now
>>
>>341917357
How?

This is probably the only game that I expect to interact with deities and named mythological shit.
>>
>>341917000
also when they go under the arch after the first enemy encounter, I Can't make out the first letter but with the other ones it reads _DRBUA
>>
>>341917554
Not in Vidya, but in other media it is.

I just hope we get a more "authentic" view of the Norse gods, especially Odin.
Nigga's so much more than a king with an eye patch
>>
>>341917554
He's being stereotypical. It's used as much as Indian mythology.
>>
>>341917000
Interesting if that turns out right. I'm totally down for more RPG elements in my GoW. I just assumed he was going to get different elemental weapons. But yeah, even the deer had shiny blue shit on its antlers. You're probably right.
>>
>>341915854
RE already had a complete overhaul with 4. The only drawback to 7's apparent new style of gameplay is no Mercenaries, like you said. But honestly that's always been a throwaway mode to me; something I spend a hour or two in and never touch again. I liked that similar mode in Revelations 2 a bit better but even that I only played for a few hours. Meanwhile I've run through the stories/campaigns/whatever you want to call them of RE2, Code Veronica, REmake, and RE4 multiple times each. So I'd much prefer a good core game behind RE7 rather than a bunch of extra modes.
>>
>>341917810
Only literature messes with the actual deities. Even TV shows only reference them.

I don't know how they fit in the actual gods, its going to take a story trailer to persuade me that Kratos or the kid isn't Odin.
>>
>>341918320
Sure. I love the campaigns as well. But just looking at this. It looks like some Outlast and P.T. hybrid bullshit. That's just not RE. Thank god I read an interview that they weren't doing away with weapons and combat or I would really be losing my shit.

Admittedly, I started out with RE 4 and 5 and then the original trilogy so I wasn't as butthurt with 4's overhaul. But 4 just seemed like a natural transition to me from the tank controls. RE never seemed that scary to me so RE 7 doesn't seem like a return to its roots are whatever they are trying to do. Especially with the first person. I just don't know man
>>
I'm probably alone here, but I don't see Kratos as much of an asshole as the general public does, nor as a complete murderer of innocents till 2 and 3.

Taking the entire series into consideration, Kratos started out human, caring about his family and his fellow men to a degree, went through shit growing up, rose up through the ranks, got consumed by ambition and ended up taking up a deal with Ares to survive not only to live another day, but to see his family again. And then everything went to shit from there.

That's not even covering the stuff in Ghost of Sparta and vice versa.
>>
>>341920304
I just see him as a dude with a singular focus while also being consumed with rage. Being an asshole is just a side effect of that I guess.

He totally kills people that he doesn't have to and callously kills people to complete puzzles without a second thought. If that's not being an asshole I don't know what is.
>>
>>341920304
He was always an innocent-murdering asshole, but in GoW1 he only did so because it was necessary to overcome whatever obstacles were in his way. He only went full rage-fueled nutjob in 2 and 3 (never played Ascension, so I have no idea how he was in that). Apparently that's part of the story for the new game; becoming a god gave him a rage "sickness" that he wants to make sure hasn't been passed on to his son.

>>
Reminder Kratos becomes Odin. He's gonna lose an eye by the end of the game.
>>
>>341921741
Exactly.
Odin is a God of War
He's not some king who sits on a throne.
He goes around and gets shit done.
He's Chaotic Neutral.

He's a god of the berserkers. The god who hanged himself from a tree. The god who plucked out his own eye for knowledge.
>>
>>341921773
For some reason I can't see them showing anything until PS Experience 2016. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

I loved old Kratos.

>>
>>341922553
>I OWE YOU NOTHING!
>Seriously I noticed inmediatly when he talked that they changed voice actors, I miss the old voice actor a lot
Same. Nigga (sic) was based.
>>
Why do people think its a reboot when its a sequel?
>>
>>341922553
Teal'c is pretty based though. I think he will do find as Kratos as long as he channels his inner angry Jaffa
>>
>>341921981
No, he's going to kill Tyr, but he will become Odin.

Odin is an exception in European religions.
All the central deities in European religions come from the proto-Indo-European word for "Skyfather".

Zeus, Jupiter, Dieu. All from the same root.

However, in Norse/old Germanic, the god whose name meant "Skyfather" was Tyr.
But Wotan/Odin/Woden is the Allfather. How did Odin supplant Tyr as the central figure?

There are no stories of it in mythology, but it's perfect for this game. Odin is a God of War that supplants a Skyfather.
Odin=Kratos.
>>
>>341922757
Because it is a reboot. It completely changed the artstyle, gameplay and narrative
>>
>>341922791
But wasn't Tyr a son of Odin or under him? Who will fight Fenrir in Ragnarok if they have you kill Tyr?
>>
>>341922309
And also in one saga drank seamen of hanged men but it's conviniently forgotten just like rainbow bridge to Valhalla because it's not grimdark enough.
>>
>>341922791
>>341923101
If he's odin is Tyr his wife's son?
>>
>>341923001
So did GTA 3, nobody called it a reboot.
>>
>>341913991

Ive looked really really hard but couldnt see any Valkyrie looking thing in the cave nor a floating ghost type craeture.
>>
>>341922757
Cause what we've seen so far is simply so much different that what we're used to. It's not a reboot but I can understand why some people would think it is.
>>
So, how will he fuck Loki if his son is there?
>>
>>341921026
The prequel games explain why Kratos went so nuts.

Ascension has him at his most human after killing his family accidentally, the bond with the furies blocked out his memory of it but he still wanted to be free of Ares and ended up becoming friends with their son, Orkos. He also helped others from being killed and was very empathetic towards the Oracle of the game. When he kills them and finds out the Furies put his bond inside Orkos, he doesn't actually want to kill him. Orkos tells him to do it to have an honorable death to free him from Ares and avenge his family, then his memories come back in full flood leading to the nightmares he has from that point on. Then he has a viking funeral for Orkos, putting his body in his burning home and going on the journey to free himself from his past and move forward.

By Chains of Olympus he's worn down of doing requests for the Gods and dealing with the nightmares after 5 years, only feeling relief during battle. By the end when he has what he really desired all this time, he gives it up to save the world from being destroyed by Atlas, explaining how Kratos trapped Atlas when he mentions it in 2.

Then cue 1 and you can tell he's only got a tiny thread of humanity left in him with his actions.

Ghost of Sparta just gets rid of any hope Kratos had left which explains why he's a straight up monster in 2 and 3, only caring about himself aside from when he found out Zeus destroyed Sparta.
>>
>>341920782
I'd say it's more a side effect of all the shit he's gone through, Kratos is probably the closest to the vidya equivalent of Guts.
>>
The gameplay resembles the Last of Us to me. I hope to God it doesn't stay that way for the whole game. I'm really interested but that camera worries me and if it turns out like the Last of Us or Reboot Raider, it will be an instant drop.
>>
>>341923316
Sorry dude. In my excitement I forgot to time stamp stuff.

You can see the ghost type thing hovering above his son's head in the distance at 3:34 and dart off when Kratos starts running towards him. It might be a little tough to see on a phone though

At 6:46 look in the top left corner. Not sure what it is, but Valkyries are the only armored flying things I could think of pertaining to Norse mythology
>>
>>341913991
I wonder if we'll see the ship captain again
>>
>your mother taught you to hunt, yes?
>yes, sir
Is that the kind of dialogue that happens between biological father and son?
>>
>>341924915
You can easily infer that Kratos didn't spend time with him growing up.
>>
>>341923316
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ_GCPaKywg
>At 6:45 when he looks to the left at the tents at the top left you can see a blue looking thing move to the right.
>At 3:34 you can see the ghost on the right behind where the kid is. Look above that brown spot above the kid. Its in between the stone and the skinny tree. At 3:45 look at where the green leaves on the right are when Kratos moves further up, you can see the ghost move to the right out of view.
>>
>>341913991
There is a big wolf behind a tent that runs away in the ruins where the dead troll is.
>>
>>341923196
>>341923101
Tyr is a son of Odin, but his name says more.

The root of his name is Skyfather, just like Zeus and Jupiter.
All the words and religions come from a common source.

So at one point, he was the same god as Zeus. But over time and as languages and cultures diverged, he was superseded by Odin, who is actually associated with Mercury/Hermes.

Not in the way you think, though. Hermes' other trait besides being a messenger is being a psychopomp. As escort to the newly deceased. A psychopomp brings the newly dead to the gates of the afterlife.

That's why in English we have Wednesday (Odin's Day) and in French we have Mercredi (Mercury's Day).
Legacy of the Romans.
>>
>>341924382
I didn't read much past the eclipse stuff. Guts becomes colder, but I don't remember him even coming close to killing innocents. It's been a while since I read it though so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Kratos, on the other hand, is a straight up dick at times.
>>
>>341924976
>>341924915
I honestly find it hard Kratos would give a shit about someone who didn't come form him.
>>
>>341925143
Do you think Kratos will have multiple weapons? Other outfits?
>>
>>341925319
I can dig it.
He wants to settle down. He wants to go back to being what he was before everything went to shit.

Just slip right back into that role of being a father.
He's not seeing the boy. He's seeing his daughter.

A man like him doesn't want to start from scratch. He just wants everything to go back to the way it was.
So he can pretend it never happened
>>
>>341925226
As the Black Swordsman he was a straight up dick, it isn't till he meets Puck and sees Casca again that he stops being a dick.

You should continue reading Berserk by the way, The new Musou game, manga coming back monthly again, and the new anime in a couple of weeks. Great time to be a Berserkfag.
>>
>>341925319
>>341925482
Cory Barlog said he does want to start from scratch and move on.
>>
>>341925319
In the second game he cares about Sparta and his people, so it's not too farfetched for him to deliberately cause enmity and hate to conceive victory, while protecting those dear to him.
>>
>>341925353
Of course.

Germanic culture had a hardon for named weapons.
That's fucking choice for vidya games.

There's already the most famous weapon in the world there. Mjolnir. He has to wield it.

Odin's weapon, a spear, is named Gungnir. It never misses. That'll be a weapon.

I'd bet bottom dollar that Hrunting is the game too.
That was a magic sword given to Beowulf to kill Grendel's Mother.
>>
>>341925807
I hope they use Heimdall and Baldr, that's all I hope for. I'm not one for magical weapons, but the chraracters of Norse mythology are pretty creative and malleable.
>>
>>341925143
Dropping that knowledge. Really liking how this thread is coming along
>>
>>341915276
This.

I think /v/'s oversperging over this, but I can see where they're coming from. The demo really only hints at things that it should state clearly. Will the whole game be this slow? How will the son interact with the gameplay? How open are the levels? etc.
>>
>>341925969
It's literally information you can get anywhere on Wikipedia, don't turn this into a barbershop rhetoric
>>
>>341925965
As someone who GMs a lot of /tg/ stuff, I fucking love magical weapons. I like to take inspiration from the legends surrounding them and convert that to game mechanics.
>>
>>341923143
Scandinavian here.

Since when has Bifrost ever been forgotten? That's such base-level norse mythology that everyone knows it by heart.

Also, please remember the following:

1. There is no such thing as Ice Giants in Norse Mythology, there are Jotun/Jætter/Ettin, who are neither particularly frosty nor necessarily very gigantic
2. Thor has red hair.
>>
>>341925536
Interesting. I actual got to that part. It's just that everything up to and including the eclipse was fucking perfect to me. I guess I just forgot about that. Definitely will pick it back up. Berserk and Gantz pretty much made my balls drop as a kid so I'll give it another shot
>>
>>341926327
I'm more of a Legend of Zelda person. Items represent the hero, not vice versa, but I wholly concede on your appreciation.
>>
>>341926329
It might have been forgotten before Marvel put out those movies. Now everyone and their dog knows it. The ice giant thing is on point, everyone thinks Jotun are Ice Giants.
>>
>>341924915
The kid calls him "father" at several points.

I get the impression that the following happened:

>Kratos fucked some viking woman
>Years later, he meets her again
>"Hey Kratos, see that kid? He's yours"
>Woman dies or something
>Kratos now has to take care of a son he's never known.

It's all speculation at this point, though.
>>
>>341926098

>>

>>
>>341926662

>>
>>341925965
Oh yeah.
I hope Baldr is in it, though his story is pretty definite about his death.
Such a fun one.

An oracle tells Frigg, his mother and wife of Odin, that he will die. Since Baldr is so great, the most beautiful and the wise, Frigg is distraught. So she goes across the world asking everything to never hurt Baldr. Ever stone. Every weapon. Every animal. They all make an oath to her that they shall never hurt Baldr.
Except one.
Mistletoe. Frigg looks at the parasitic weed and decides it's not worth worrying too much. How can such a tiny bush matter? Afterall, she has already got all the wolves, bears, and iron to swear never to hurt Baldr.

Loki, being the dick he is, sees this and decides to make her regret that decision.
Loki forms the mistletoe into an arrow. Then he goes to the blind brother of Baldr, Hoor.
He asks Hoor to show him how good a shot he is at the bow. Hoor declares that just because he is blind, it doesn't mean he's useless. He takes up Loki's challenge and notches the mistletoe arrow.

Meanwhile, Loki had arranged for Baldr to be walking directly into the line of fire of Hoor's shot.
Sure enough, it strikes Baldr and kills him.
Loki is happy.
Odin, Frigg, and the rest of the Aesir weep the death of the best of all of them, and so begins the start of Ragnarok.
>>
>>341926613

A big appeal to the Greek mythology is that the Greek gods are pretty human.
They're fallible. They make mistakes. They have desires.
They're relatable.

The Norse gods are like that but more.
They're not really good people.
I mean, the Greek gods are no saints, but at least Zeus as heroic moments.

Odin is a God of War and a God of a whole lot of other not so nice things.

To sum it up, the Norse wrote stories about Gods who will die. They must die.
That says a lot about the themes they're aiming for.

>Thor is a redhead
Finally.
"Redbeard" used to be an epithet for Thor.
>>
>>341929784
AH maybe that's it.

I wanna know how they'll combine the creation myths of Greek and Norse, since they're pretty different. Like, whats the true origin of the titans and the gods, and is it true that Kratos is going to start a new pantheon that will be called Norse gods by mortals? I do and don't like that idea. Strange.
>>
>End of 3 implies this is how humanity starts, with a clean slate
>LOL WHOOPS 4 takes place before Norse culture begins, during the era when gods still walked the earth

So what excuse are they going to pull after Ragnarok to make another trilogy?
>>
>>341924915
Easily. It's like saying " Dont talk to your mother like that"
>>
>>341929602
I'd argue that whilst the norse gods are still RELATIVELY relatable as far as gods go, they're way less prone to fuck with mortal affairs than the greek gods were. Honestly, I don't think the premise of God of War (ie Kratos killing gods) works in the context of norse mythology. Thor would team up with Kratos to kick frost giant ass, not do something to Kratos to make him mad enough to want to kill the gods. The gods whose fate is definitively decided, by the way; their job is to die for midgard and the rest of creation then ushering in a new age of peace after ragnarök.

If Kratos ends up fighting alongside the gods in ragnarök it'd be pretty fucking rad. It's not even out of line, Valhalla's a gathering place for men who die fighting that are then given the honour of fighting alongside Odin when the world's finally ending (and being reborn).
>>
Can we get pictures of the easter eggs mentioned here? I'm too fucking stupid to find them myself

>As game/series progresses, Kratos kills the Norse Gods as usual.

>Kratos and Thor have to battle to the death, Kratos haunted in that he raised the boy in his own image, Thor haunted in that he is tasked to kill the man who raised him by the God who sired him.

He could be I guess. Or rather; he's not in Valhalla, he's in Asgard. Valhalla specifically is the hall of Odin, the place where half the warriors who die in battle might go whilst the other half goes to Freya's field, called Fólkvangr. Asgard is the realm of the gods (the aesir) where both Valhalla and Fólkvangr are located. Though I gotta say I'm not sure; if that truly was Asgard we saw in the gameplay trailer, then what the SHIT is Jörmungandr doing up there? His job is to curl around Midgard, keeping the realm of men from collapsing until Ragnarök hits and he goes berserk and gets promptly killed by Thor (who later succumbs to the serpent's poison) - it's all decided from the start, innit.

Fun fact: Midgard is a far simpler word than you expect.

The old Norse word "gard" means exactly what it looks to mean.
Yard.
Place.
Place that is guarded.

Even that word "Guard" derives from gard/yard.
Modern Swedish has "gard" pronounced as "gyard".
Just like how our ancient Saxon ancestors almost pronounced it.

English is such a fun language because the language is like a broken whore after a unforgettable gangbang.
We have the semen of so many cultures all over our languages.

Now it gets fun.
So we have "gard" as a place.
Midgard. The middle place.
Then we have yard. The local place.
Then we have ward, the person of a place.
Then we have warden, the watcher of a place.

Ward/warden is very old.
The old Frankish language had that word.
When the Gaulo-Roman citizens learned it after their Frankish conquest, the didn't have a letter for the "W" sound.
So they tried their best and came up with "guard" and "guardian".
Those are French words we English learned during the Conquest of William the Conqueror, who was a Norman of Viking descent. A descendent of Rollo the Viking.

So in English, we have ward and warden, from the Germanic roots, and guard and guardian, from the second hand Frankish/Latin interpretation.

I have to agree.
>>
>>341934837
Funner fact yet still: Language history is responsible for WW2.

Ok, so in the 19th century, an English linguist went to India to do some colonialist shit.
While there, he noticed a striking similarity between old Sanskrit and Latin and Greek.

Curious fucker that he is, he did an in depth comparison.
He discovered that Sanskrit and Latin/Greek had way too many similarities to be an accident.

How do you account for such a similarity?

He thought that the Indian ancestor people and the Mediterranean ancestor people were really one and that they spoke the same language.
As time went on, some went East to India and some went West to Europe.
He was right.
He named those ancestor people the "Aryans".
The Sanskrit word for "Lord".

Move up a 100 years, Germans start to get antsy. Partly because they were made to suck Franco-English dick after WW! and partly because a book was discovered from Ancient Rome that said that the Germanic people were so similar that they must be pure bloods. They didn't interbreed with outsiders (unlike the Romans who only cared about citizenship).

So combine the two and suddenly you get the concept of pure Aryan ancestors.
You know who are not Indo-European? Jews.

If you study history, everything about WW2 make sense.
Even Hitler's illogical attack on Russia.
He wanted to conquer the funnel into Europe. According to the Heartland theory of the 19th century, whoever controls Easter Europe controls Western Europe.

Everything is just history.
Learn it and see everything coming

History is the best thing we have to understand the world.

There's a great Onion video about a History professor who is maniacal about telling people how everything has happened before and how it's happening again.

DESU, America is my favourite study. The Founding Fathers modelled their republic around ancient Rome.
They tried to improve it.

But they failed. If you learn Roman republican history, you see so many repeated themes in America now.

Honestly, I think every Western child should learn Roman history in depth.
We're still living in the post-Roman world.
We're the ashes of Rome built up.
>>
>>341937832
WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH 19TH CENTURY ROMANTICISM IN LITERATURE AND THE DECLINE OF GOD OF WAR'S STORY TELLING
>>
>>341937832
They didn't model it on Rome so much as be the culmination of 2500 years of development of philosophy about rights and the functions of government.
But I agree that we are starting to see some scary similarities. I'd love to see what they would have done differently, could they see what we've become now.
Maybe the next time we'll get it right.
>>

Nigga, I've dealt with you since I had my first drink.
Now I'm like 5 in.

I'm too drunk to give a shit what you think.

First, there are more movement in the 19th century than Romanticism.
Secondly, God of War involves mythology that is actually the basis of our society, even though we've forgotten it.

For example, the term "money" comes from a name of Juno (Hera in Greek).

The sealed temple of Juno was called Juno Moneta. Money was minted there in her protection.

As our primitive ass Celtic ancestors had no concept of money, coins from the Temple of Juno Moneta was the be all end all of money.
And so Moneta eventually became Money.

We say Money because of Juno's temple.

>the culmination of 2500 years of development of philosophy about rights and the functions of government.
What culimation?
In the the 1750s, what had the world to go on for a republic?
Fuck all.

The Founding Fathers modelled their new government on Rome.

For one, they looked at the consular limit of 1 year.
They looked at the literature and understood how that 1 year was not enough. So many problems in Republican Rome came from a consul being greedy and trying to make his name in just one year.
That's why the Dictatorship evolved.

The early Americans knew this and figured that 4 years was enough to make a difference but not to make a Caesar or a Sulla.

The early Americans were overtly Roman inspired.
Consider the order of Cincinnatus. A society created to reflect the model citizen of the old Roman dictator (not meaning the modern meaning of the word).
Look at all the names of New England cities.
All named after Roman shit.

Look at the statue of Washington. Modelled after the statue of Zeus at Olympus.
Look at the statue of Lincoln, a century later.
Do you know what he's grasping in his chair?
Fasces. A modern symbol of Fascism (where the name even derives), but in that time it simply meant "imperium" as did in the old Roman times. The right to rule absolutely.

America is the old Roman Republic reborn, intentionally.
Trump is a modern Cato the Elder.
Hopefully not a version of a Gracchus.
