The game still looks for the gamepad. For the NX to be able to run WiiU games, it would have to be capable of telling the games to pick up the gamepad, then tell the game to turn it off, then allowing the game to automatically boot with whatever the NX controller is.

I'd agree with this. I will insist till my dying day that Nintendo self-sabotaged with the Wii U by reusing the Wii name and making the console look similar to the Wii (small, boxy, black/white). People were surprised when I invited them over and they learned the Wii U wasn't the controller but an entirely different console.
They need to distance themselves from the brand to get people to even know they're releasing new hardware.
