I always struggle more with youmu than any other boss in this game. Honestly Ive just never learned to deal with the weird intentional slow down

Same here, I find Youmu to be the hardest boss in the game. Even Yukari doesn't get as hard until the end.
Can't help you there, I never tried too much against Youmu. Once I get past stage 4, I usually have enough resources to cheese the rest of the game.
