To what end? You could go and do all of that on your own time if you actually wanted to.
But the truth is, the end game is all that matters, people power through the levels, ignoring the effort and creativity put into each of the quests and story, just so they can jump into the arena/raids.
Even putting such an arbitrary requirement to unlock flying won't have people reading quest text or stopping to take in the aesthetics, it's all fast paced, ultra streamlined grinding to get what they want.

There are things that I enjoyed doing; pvp, raids, leveling alts but unfortunately none of those allowed me to unlock flying. So I had to do stuff I didn't like in order to unlock flying. Dungeon leveling is objectively the quickest way to level. Good luck chaining enough of them in whatever free time you have if you're not a tank. The only downside is that you are literally grinding for levels so it can get boring really quickly.

To be fair, WoW clearly has less players now that it ever has. The last time Sub numbers were reported, WoD had lost half the total subs in the game, and that was little under a year ago.
The server I was on is completely dead, despite it being "High" population when WoD released. Just trying to sell things on the AH is almost impossible, we have 1-2 raiding guilds, if that, and even with cross realms there's no WPvP to speak of.
If I made a conservative guess, I'd say WoW is now below 5million players.

There's a part in endgame WoD I went to that was called "The Pit" and it was basically flooded with grouped up elites that were hard as fuck to kill and I had to carefully pay attention to what I was doing. I actually had to eat food after fights because after every group of 4-5 mobs I'd end up with like 20% health (while using self heals and cooldowns). And it was some of the most fun I had in WoW in a long time, it brought me back to earlier expac leveling. I didn't need to call in for health, I just needed to pull carefully and be aware of what I was doing.
Don't make quests RNGfests that have a 20% chance of dropping a bear ass, just make the combat hard. No artifical lengthening needed.

Yup. I started playing near the end of WotLK. There wasn't much activity in vanilla and TBC zones, but there was PvP there. Allys would run up on a nigga at random and it was fun. In Northrend, where everyone was flying, I got no action. I also played Nost, and PvP in stonetalon or the fucking hillsbrad war zone was fun as fucking shit.

Who said anything about Vanilla? BC and Wrath had much more enjoyable questing. There was no need for grinding because the world has more filled out, and there were still quests that took you around the world just to deliver a message. It still had the sense of adventure the game used to have without as many inconveniences. There's also the fact that you could see people around you in places other than the starting area. Because of phasing and how quest hubs work, the world now is barren even if you know there are people questing in the same area.
