The fire mechanics look cool but I don't really like how the game looks overall. I'm not sure what's the problem exactly, maybe the colors are just too muted. It's not cartoony enough to look simplistic like wind-waker but it's also not detailed enough to look realistic.

The pop-in looks terrible as well, but maybe they'll improve that before release.

Twilight princess was most certainly not open world. You couldnt do anything in that big field. You couldnt even climb the trees or rocks. If you ventured off the path you wouldnt find much save for a bug or heart piece.

With this game you can interact with the environment much more.

Like people have already said, the towns and NPCs were removed for the demo. The final prduct will be a lot less baren.

You can even see in the gameplay that there are quite a few large patches of concrete in seemingly random spots. Thats where I speculate the towns are going to be.

Breath of the Wild is open world. Its built around exploring and finding things on your own. Majoras Mask for an example, tells you exactly where to go and more or less what to do. Everything is in a set order. Despite the world being open, I personally would not consider it an open world game.

I don't think there's enough gameplay to really base anything about the game on. All the things you do are akin to games like Farcry 3 where you wander a bit, hit a story checkpoint, wander, rinse, repeat. You'd need maybe 2 hours to really see the scope of whats there to do because, like you said, it is indeed desolate and barren. It's an illusion by the developers, not just nintendo, to create an immersive environment.

Its more to do with the dynamics in the world that you can create or destroy that make a true sandbox world (i.e minecraft). It bothered me in Link Between Worlds personally because it made all the dungeons piss easy, but I have a hunch that despite the ability to do whichever order you want in Breath of the Wild, there will still be a suggested or implied order. I just want an actual difficulty curve that the previous "whatever order" zelda didn't have.

Dynamics in video games can cause a lot of problems, very true.

It has destroyed a lot of the Elder Scrolls games' believeability when you could rush a certain item you knew existed somewhere and just start slaughtering shit outright. That doesn't mean its not a great series in some respect. Even as bad as Oblivion there are mods to make it tolerable at the least and with some restraint you could have a great 100 hours of gameplay or so.

That will be a point of contention when this game comes out. That there is little challenge in replays such that you're indeed left with nothing but a min-maxed route to the proper dungeon with the best items and weakest enemies. Good for speed running, bad for longevity.

If this game doesn't get the best reception, i'd say nintendo won't know where to take the series next as they're trying just about fucking everything to keep it fresh.

There was a difficulty curve in ALBW, the game was just generally easy. The dungeons that were the hardest to get to were harder. It's pretty obvious on Hero mode because enemies in those areas all do 8 or 16 hearts of damage.

I like being able to find master environments and find the best stuff early. That's why I don't like Elder Scrolls, because Oblivion on is leveled to shit and you can't get much of a disparity between you and the world. That's what makes those games feel so lifeless and shitty. Morrowind was much better about that, although even then, the real kicker is the question of how that stuff is balanced. If you make a good world where overpowered doodads are available to you fromt he outset, they need to be difficult to get to. This is something Bethesda has never understood and it fucks their games up so badly going all the way back. Morrowind had some of the most powerful equipment in the game on top of a dresser in what was basically the starting city. It's so bad it almost feels like it was left in there for debug purposes and they forgot to take it out of the game.

This is a Zelda game, so they understand how to gate stuff off properly. If they can match the risk to the reward, there's no problem with having "optimal" routes.

One of the biggest complaints I'm seeing from people is the empty fields. From the game play we saw the Great Plateau. The developers said that it was approximately 1% of the total map size. Assuming a fan calculation of the map size was correct of around 360 square kilometers, the starting area we saw was only 3 square kilometers. So saying the entire game is barren based on what we saw from the STARTING AREA, which is only 1% of the map, is a little ridiculous.

I agree. The balance lies in "power" versus "accessibility". If you're making everything accessible, many of those explored areas cannot realistically bear out powerful rewards.

Therefore, most explored areas should be enjoyable to explore. I don't see how they can make finding a couple dodongos in a valley with a few placed doodads with a chest fun.

We'll see but I've already tasted at least part of what they're offering with wind waker. And WW's best moments were in towns and dungeons, not out at sea climbing sea tower platform things without much reward.

Don't fall for the hype. Be an impartial observer and compare and contrast this game with other games. Nintendo is trying to compete after all.

Bounding boxes are not that bad to code.
You have one coordinate at the center of the model. Two models come close, you check a distance from the center out (the radius of the object) and compare it to the other object. If their two radii have a common coordinate, do something.

Well Wind Waker did it completely fucking wrong because they made every significant part of the world mandatory and item gated most of them until the end of the game so exploring was absolute shit and you couldn't do anything. Then the optional content they made was insubstantial, copy-pasted, and made ridiculously tedious because they had a terrible reward structure that either gave you rupees or a fuck-off treasure chart.

Accessible means "possible to access," not "easy to access." You can put a super powerful weapon in the middle of a lava field and it's possible to get there before you're supposed to, but realistically most people won't be able to without the Hylian Hazmat suit you get at some later point. That's what I'm thinking, don't have hard item gates like Wind Waker because that makes exploration shitty. Balance the game out in such a way that if there's a reward, there's a risk.

The latter changes dramatically to the point of "unable to clearly define" when you add in optional and alternate routes and you're left only with some estimation of how early a player can achieve that access.

Why would they showcase an empty field if the game had much more interesting environments? There's no reason not to assume that it's representative of the overall look of the game until proven otherwise. The Wii U won't suddenly grow an extra GPU, it's pretty obvious that they're limited by the hardware. Even though there isn't that much stuff on the screen there's pop-in everywhere.
