Final Fantasy always tries something new with each title but it manages to maintain a sort of, for lack of better word, essence? Something that is distinctly Final Fantasy.
Many of the iterations have been a blend of high fantasy and steam punk.
Final Fantasy VII moved away from this and became their most popular title. But it wasn't this setting alone that made it what it so popular, it was its revolutionary step forward on the PS1. It could have been IX in its place and still been a massive deal.
Final Fantasy's innovation has always come from new gameplay additions but it has never radically moved away from its blend of Fantasy and steampunk, at least not for too long.
VII and VIII went full Sci Fi and then brought it back to nostalgic classic Final Fantasy with IX, and people loved it. IX gets overlooked because it came late to the PS1's life and was quickly overshadowed by X.
XIV is popular because of how much it plays on the nostalgia for the older titles, it captures that Final Fantasy essence.
If XV, and the series in general is to succeed, it has to find its essence again, it needs to bring back the fantasy.
I mean look at how popular Bravely Default is with FF fans. They call it an unofficial Final Fantasy.
If XV fails, it's because it didn't have enough fantasy to successfully capture the essence that has made the series what it is.
