2004 was a very different era compared to the reasoning behind why people buy consoles now. Exclusives that you absolutely couldn't get anywhere else weren't the only reason to buy the PS2 because multiplats were huge and perfectly serviceable too.
Metal Gear Solid 2/3 were reasons enough to own one too.

I was a total Xbot that gen, as it was and still is my favorite console, but I still played my PS2 just for Gundam Federation vs Zeon and a few other good exclusive games. These weren't even big name exclusives, but they were enough to keep the console around on their own.
PS2 had more good exclusives than the Xbox, in fact, and the OG Xbox is my favorite console.

Even outside of exclusives, PS2 probably has the best total library of games of any console. If i had to be stranded on a desert island with just ONE, it would clearly be the PS2.

This so much. There's quite a few games I still want to play for PS2 which were never localized, and never will be. I was hoping maybe Sony would roll some of them out with translated menus and subs via their PS2 on PS4 lineup, but they haven't ported much just yet.
