I'll preface by saying I haven't played any of the games, but want to get into them. I considered Sophie as a place to jump in but hear it's not up to standards. Is this true?

It's probably the most beginner friendly atelier game out there. No time limits, crafting is not as complex as it was in previous games and characters are paper thin. If you haven't played the other ateliers you don't know what you're missing though.

Crafting being not as complex really kills me, by not having time limit you would they would make crafting more deep, gives you time to collect the best materials and making the highest stuff you could produce.
