They've poked at this idea for years. PSX Magazione was kind of like this, and PlayStation Underground pulled similar.
Thing is, with season pass and pre-orders, IAPs and micro-transactions, dlc and cut content dlc (or paid skins and cheat codes), or even pay to play online, consoles have pushed an agenda on the consumer and rather than changing people, it evolved a new market that is indifferent about being charge small but cumulative amounts of money for something like a demo; which used to be for enticing people to spend on a game, not the other way around.
But then crowdfunding proves that people will pay for less than a demo, or even a game that might never see the light of day.
Like it or not the spending majority is very okay with this. If you're paying for PSN, season pass, XBL Gold, or crowdfunding, you're a part of the same demographic that supports paid demos and paid mods.
