I feel like betraying the KKK is the more intended route. The climactic moment of Cartman's fight is a flaming fart vs. fart beam struggle, the perfect cap to the arc. Kyle's beam struggle just has him use a leafblower, which is kind of lame in comparison. Similar thing with Butters having a way more entertaining and emotionally charged boss fight than boring old Stan who you've barely interacted with.
It's weird, joining the more boring faction leads to more interesting fights.
