I've been playing with a personal rule of "don't attack unless they attack first" so I never feel any remorse over bandits I kill. Another rule is, if they attempt to yield, I give them a chance by unseating my sword, but they always attack me the second I turn my back. They deserve no pity.

I want to be the next Kojima when it comes to stealth games. I want to revolutionize the way stealth games are done the way Kojima blew people away with each innovation you saw in gameplay from Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3.
One of my ideas is to give NPC's very unique and special scripted actions for each area. They are not copy/pastes of the same soldier in every area. I really want each NPC to feel like a different person. Like in OP's scenario, if two guys are talking to each other and you can tell they hold a very special bond with each other I really want one of them to flip out and go crazy if you snipe his best friend mid conversation. Give the NPC's internal "fear" and "anger" variables that differ based on how you approach killing them.
