I don't think anyone has ever called me a gamer despite the fact that it's my main hobby and I put hundreds of hours into games. People will say I play video games or play on the computer, but never have I been called a gamer unironically. Only my friends say it and they do it as a joke since we all know it sounds retarded.
Video games are just a hobby, not a source of identification or a role. I also cook, swim, jog, listen to music, and read. I have never been called a cooker, swimmer, jogger, listener, or reader since they're just hobbies. I understand being called a gamer if your actual job is to play video games, like if you enter competitions as a source of income or if you stream. But I don't, so it wouldn't make any sense to be called one.
