I need some help. How do you take cities in Civ V without incurring a warmonger penalty for the rest of the game?

I like to play as Rome, and with Rome you have a power spike as soon as you start building Legions/Ballista. Naturally I want to use that power spike to conquer shit and build myself up a lead before they become obsolete. The problem is if I ever take so much as one city in 300 AD, the rest of the game my diplomacy is fucking ruined because everyone hates me and there's no way to change that.

What do?
>>
Disregard diplomacy, take advantage of your military lead, and keep conquering.

Or, if you care about diplomacy, then stop conquering.
>>
make a trade deal with a civ to declare war on a city state then liberate it to remove the warmonger penalty
>>
>nerdshit
>>
>>341808410
Wait, so if you liberate a city state your warmonger penalty disappears? Seriously?
>>
>>341807891

stack units on their borders. when they ask 'hey if you're gonna attack me just fucking do it' say yes, declare war. it counts as them attacking you

exterminating an entire civ is also a bad idea for diplomacy. i like to let a city state take the last city
>>
>>341808601
yeah
>>
>>341808672
I already do this, but taking their cities gives me a "MAJOR WARMONGERING" penalty anyway.
>>

>>
>>341809030

well, failing that, you can use the liberate trick. there's always one city state taken by a civ early on

failing that, burn them until there is naught but ash

I don't have a problem with winning. It's just that it's unsatisfying to have to destroy everyone because they all think you're a warmonger because you annexed Thebes 1800 years ago. It's funner to have like 'world wars' where you have cliques of likeminded civs in locked in realpolitik struggles with each other for control of the world.
>>
>>341810393

thats pretty much it up to immortal. immortal you need to follow a strict build, but the opportune time for war is when you get Dynamite. AI cannot into 3 spaces

Building on a hill gives extra hammers, which are much more important than food at the start of the game. Especially for Shoshone who can easily get 2 bonus pop from goody huts

I want so much to like this game. Civ 4 was better for its time, but I don't know. I have Civ5 and the irrational Ai and bullshit mechanics hurt this game (I have Vanilla, to hell with $65 for 2 expansions).

No OP. I read this thread and now reinstalling game. I get pissed off by the manic AI though.

Didn't one of the devs for this game dump on all the things that were wrong about it (happiness and weak late-game)?
>>
>>341812602
Yeah and they tried to fix it with BNW. Take solace that they at least admitted it had flaws instead of saying it was perfect.
>>
How do your games usually end up going?

I almost always pick Bismarck or Ausgustus, in a huge map, with 18 civs. Turtle until Landsknecht or Legions, take my neighbors best cities and then turtle the rest of the game building every wonder.

The game ends when I get the freedom Ideology with the trade agreements thing that improves relationships with city states who you have a trade route with, become allies with every city state on the map, and vote myself leader of the world.

I always play on marathon, huge continental maps as a trade heavy naval civ. I fucking love playing as Portugal or the Netherlands.
I turtle while rushing colossus and if possible Petra. Always have my trade ships generating mega bucks and wait for mid game when navy's begin to get good.

Late game naval wars are the funnest shit, especially against other humans.
I don't know why i love marathon so much.

The city state has to have enough units to break through the smidgen of health the city will have. It's not exactly common if you aren't trying to force it, but it happens.

He's been pretty quiet since then. Sure, former austriabros now hate me, but they're far enough, and all the other civs can't stop me from settling colonies to get coal. If you're going war, you should expect penalties. It also has an unexpected effect. Since if you become a warmonger, everyone denounces you. Then when they declare war on you, you do not incur penalties for starting the war.

There's also other ways to skirt war penalties. Denouncing someone before you attack lessens the penalty of going to war. And if someone dislikes the Civ you attack, they become more friendly towards you for denouncing them. Finally, if you liberate cities, your warmonger points are lessen or even eliminated. There's actually ways to get people to like you more by going to war.

How to Iroquois?
>>
>>341820489
It's like playing a vanilla civ, except their unique building is worse than what it replaces. Maybe try playing on Boreal map or something.
>>
>>341820489

Rush Longhouse and Mohawk Warrior. And since you;re going the bottom path, also rush Notre Dame. Focus on making as many cities as you can as well as spamming out Mohawk Warriors. With the Mohawk Warriors, you'll be pretty much impossible to attack until the AI gets Musketmen. Play defensively and just keep building cities until you have around 12-14. Go Order, then just sit back, build buildings and rush a space of diplomatic victory.

If you get a religion, go Pagodas and Mosques to further help your happiness. Happiness from temples and shrines if the others aren't available.
>>
>>341820893
>just keep building cities
>until you have around 12-14
I thought you were pretty much always supposed to build tall and not wide?
>>
>>341821347

Going wide works if you plan for it. Issue is Iroquois need all that clay. Ascetism isn't a bad choice. Pagidas are a must
>>
Still can't upgrade Battleships to Missile Cruisers for some reason
>>
>>341821556

I'm not too good at wide, but what is like the best amount to have minimum.

If you don't have at least eight cities when going wide you're doing it wrong, and if you're not doing ICS and capping your cities off at 4 citizens you're really doing it wrong.

Darius is good for war right?

I'm playing him now and not sure how to expand,
I figure I'll try to win a diplomatic victory with Greece or Sweden next time. But, I want one more conquest run.

What do you all think of Byzantine?
>>
>>341821347

Some civs do better wide, some do better tall. Iriquois can do both, but that's mostly because they don't have any unique that benefit from one or the other. If you intend to go military or science with them, wider is better. If you get a godly forest start, then going tall and wonder spamming would probably be best.
>>
>>341823968
See that tile to the Northwest of your warrior?
If you had settled there you would have had more land, a river, the cotton, fewer tundra tiles, and been within two tiles of the mountain. You're going to need more than luck, friend.

>>341824590
Their UA is practically worthless and their UUs are absolutely worthless because you can't win with a navy early-game on higher difficulties because of how much production ships eat and how fragile they are to damage. They're a joke of a civ, as bad as the Iroquois and Danes.

Denmark is the worst civ in the game. I'd also put Carthage up there for many of the same reasons you listed for Byzantium. But at least Byzantium has a choice between going early exploration with ships on water or a moderately strong horseman on land. Dido is basically only good for an island map. And even then, plenty of civs are better than Carthage.
>>
>>341814205
Try to get a big scientific lead and save up money until I can make a battleship. Then use my massive treasury to buy the alliance of every city state and go full warmonger. Park my battleship outside a coastal city and keep bombarding it until it's near zero health than take it with a privateer.

Civ V noob here. What do you think of Japan?
>>
>>341826036
If you survive to make Zeros, you literally dominate the game.
>>
>>341826036

Great idea, but you never start near any fish or atolls. Even after 10 restarts, it always places me on empty ocean. Then I restart the game as someone else like Inca.....fish everywhere.

Samurai are also kind of lackluster. Even after they fixed it so they upgrade to Rifleman, there's still nothing special about them. You have about 10 turns where Samurai dominate, then all AI get musketmen and you're just fighting on equal footing. Samurai really should have had an extra upgrade when you build them.
