Tbh, Nintendo shoulda gotten Miyazaki to do the art for them. The actual artstyle and character designs are kind of ugly. They already said they were using anime references, especially with the art style, and the homage to Mononoke is a bit uncanny.

Nintendo's hired really good artists before. TP for example had some incredible designs.
I'm just saying, if they were going for an anime look. And are obviously paying reference to Mononoke, then why not hire the most famous animator alive to do some sketches for you? The painting aesthetic was the last game with the impressionist style. We did that once already.
They said in the live session that the game has anime influence in regard to style, and upon close inspection, there's a lot in it that resembles Princess Mononoke. Link's design feels a lot like Ashitaka, and the first trailer bears resemblance to the opening scene of the film.
Mononoke influences, whether intentional or not, are there.
I would have much rather seen this game get its own unique style, than copy the one from the worst 3D Zelda.
