Make players basically squad leaders with AI squaddies that follow them around. Squad leader gets all the cool stuff while the squaddies make do with standard issue.
The composition of a player squad is determined by the selected class. Assault squaddies get shotguns and more explosives, medics have squaddies that can heal players and AI, ect.
Player squads can team up into platoons. Platoons allow access to different kinds of squaddies, vehicles, and weapons.

All other melee will be a dedicated weapon. Once melee weapon is drawn gameplay is similar to Chivalry. Add a variety of weapons with different attack speeds/ability block less chip damage/knives can be wielded with an off hand pistol that can't be ADS.
With games like BF I usually just play the best 2-3 maps that I really like, so as long as the maps are high quality and fun to play I don't mind.
And since they are cutting on the number of maps you'd think that they would spend much more time polishing and adding more detail and shit to the few maps they have.

We were able to play Doom MP before the game came out and it was complete shit, chaikaposter.
It's totally reasonable for people to have assumed that the entire game sucked and to not expect it to at least be as decent as Wolfenstein TNO.

However this will never happen with BF. The cycle is the same.
Everyone sees the new footage and are swept away by graphics. Some fall out of this honeymoon period in days and remind everyone the game will be shit.
Then the game comes out and it IS shit except some poor fools didn't learn from the last time so they went and bought it.
Then there's a 1 week post purchase honeymoon period again where they are swept away by graphics before they realize the game completely sucks and they can play something better.
