Bayo 2 was already partially developed, as it had been started under SEGA. Nintendo was willing to give them what they needed to finish the project, in exchange for them also doing an original IP (Wonderful 101). So it wasn't even at 400k likely, and yet VGC had it listed at over 800k. It's probably sold another 50-100k since then but it's extremely unlikely it sold more than that since Nov. 2015; games just don't have tails like that. I mean even if it had the legs of something like GTAV or Minecraft (which it certainly doesn't) that would still only be 100k-200k more than in Nov. 2016 and put it at 500-600k max

They mentioned in the interview yesterday that nier 1 wouldn't be necessary to understand nier 2, but that there would be some references to characters or places. This is seen in the concept art how some robots are shown using the masks and clothes of the people of facade.
And nier isn't a bad game, it's a poorly balanced, grindy game at its worst, but not bad. You should still play it if you get the chance. Or at the very least listen to the soundtrack
