It's from a time where MMOs were just chatrooms with combat. You spent most of your time talking to people, making friends, and getting involved in guild drama that you could actually settle by stealing castles and shit. And it was really fun to run around prontera browsing player shops for hours at a time.
Modern MMOs just don't have any community and you'll probably never see someone speak outside of global chat. All the trading, questing, dungeons, raiding, PvP is totally automated so there's really no reason to interact with other people even if you wanted to.

Just like vanilla wow, size.

The amount of content in old school mmos is insane. Like, playing constantly, each of those games would last you and your clan / guild around 1-2 whole years.

Now in any new "wow killer" you level up in a very boring streamlined quest for about 2 or 3 weeks, and beat the final boss at the end of the month, see you in 4 months when we add a whole new 3 days worth of content.

The same apply to current wow: WoD was like, 2 weeks of content, but locked behind the garisson time wall so you can only complete 15 minutes per day

I am not mistaken, ragnarok was a anime set in the setting of the series.

those "mmo animes" are literally "we know we are in a digital world, we abuse mechanics, we do meta stuff XD" popularized by SAO a few years ago.
>>
>>341708907
vanilla wow had a similar case with their priest class also
and they even had mace mastery

who knew that the priest/mace thing from DnD was so influential for mmos
>>
>>341708035
Man, that game had a lot of great hats. I don't remember when it was added, but there's a whole secret cooking skill that you can unlock with the chef hat and when I found out I had my guild set up an anti-dragon hunting party for all those scales. Meanwhile our top cool guy rogue was down in Bylan dungeon 4 hunting for all the feathers we needed.

>>341708592
Oh yeah. I remember thinking I was so cool being able to use my firebrand with a field of cultivated hydra so the auto-cast was triggering constantly. But I was never actually wealthy or lucky enough for other auto-cast cards to go with it. So in the end I spent 4 months of grinding to become a really shitty sage.

indeed, wow was much less sandbox than RO was, and the rabbit hole went much deeper, but my point isnt about is what if what you have to do is good or not. It is just having stuff to do first and foremost.
>>
>>341703132
The people playing it.
You could just walk up to a party sitting in the fields and join them in their Chat and join their Party for a while and then Pop out again.

People were not as pretentious back then, but maybe that's just the way I remember it.
>>
>>341703132

Exploring WoW for the first time was fun, looking around various areas while sneaking as underleveled rogue. Getting into areas you're not suppose to, knowing full well that an admin could ban you for it.

Not once did someone in RO not help me when I asked for it, and as a male character that's surprising.

It also encouraged teamwork heavily through all of it's mechanics

The saddest thing is that the last MMO I played with a really great community was RO2 during its opening month. Everyone was looking out for each other and forming parties to do the most mundane stuff. We'd play together for hours with some people dropping out and other people getting recruited, and it was really great even though most people just wanted to talk about how awful the game was and what they were doing/planning to do with their RO characters.

/v/ please help me make ragnarok great again by hosting a private server with dropable cash items

First, I need you to answer this http://www.strawpoll.me/10506519

Remaking EXP tables means I can edit each so it's easier to level up to Lv X and then, make it super slow, kinda like forcing you to party and take down bigger monsters together

MMO auction interfaces ruins the whole comfy "town center merchant bizarre" experience.

Finding a good deal from a merchant was both rewarding and fun.
>>
>>341711278

>>
>>341711321
I've been dreaming of another MMO to recreate this, but even MMOs that come close still pussy out and include an Auction House. Even worse is when the Auction House is just all those shops condensed into one user interface, completely defeating the purpose of the bazaar shop system in the first place.

>>
>>341713079
Beyond that there were actually tons and tons of quests just out in the world. Unlocking special skills like juice making, cooking, dye making, hats, dungeons, gambling, homunculus, and there were even a bunch of normal NPC/story quests that rewarded tons of exp, although the items were usually so rare you'd get more out of your time just grinding.
>>
>>341713079
RO had quests, but they felt special. Just like Runescape had quests, but they felt special. The problem isn't quests in and of themselves. The problem is when they're the only way to level up and each one of them is the just a reskinned piece of shit that can't be distinguished from the next one. Quests like the homunculus one in RO or getting your totems as a Shaman in WoW are fucking brilliant and should remain. It's the "story" quests and the kill 10 bear asses quests that need to go.

Simplest possible system with increadible customization and actually a deep "complicated" system.

You had 6 stats you could tune, and fine tuning that shit took quite a bit.

It also gave something to the casual crowd, where even low lvl mobs dropped items that were worth a lot (cards used in pvp), and to the hardcore crowd, big badass endgame bosses.

You had pvp with WoE. And you could grind for quite a long ass fucking time before you hit the ceiling. And even so you were pretty effective even at the lower levels.

This as well >>341707498

>>
>>341709072
Actually the anime your initially responded to is a bit different in it's own right.

Main difference being that it's not another "transported into the game world" anime. It's literally an anime about a group of kids playing an MMO together. No world jumping shenanigans, no overpowered main character, just gameplay and cash shops.
>>
>>341715424

Shit you missed out on much. Mvping was so fun. I rarely did it solo tough, because it was more fun to at least bring a friend alone. Not for the super low lvl things like garfield, cat loli, and GTB, but higher end stuff. And even having fun with a whole guild going for the really endgame ones, where you had to compete with other guilds.

>>341715603

Less p2w on privates, less bots on privates, better connection on privates.

I had 50-100 ping on US based private servers from EU, meanwhile on the official US server i would get 250-300. And the official servers are p2w as fuck.
>>
>>341715603
Because the game was subscription only when it was new, the english servers were months if not years behind the korean servers in terms of content, and the official servers require several lifetimes of grinding while private servers are free to adjust Xp and drop rates to something actually sane.

It does not help that the /vg/ shitters are REALLY FUCKING BAD, at the game. Ok, sure, they can grind up the money and a character and read a build guide. Private servers got updates way earlier
Resets, which allowed min-maxed WoE and no fear of fucking up builds or having to level up as a low int priest and other WoE builds

>>
>>341716271

Don't know about WoW (Nostralrius is wow right?), was talking about my experiences from the /rog/ threads and guilds.

>>341716295

One of the more succesfull private servers was 3/3/2 iirc, EuphRO. I think it had more people playing at any given time than the officials at its prime.

Also, if you wanted to be worthwhile in WoE, you needed a guild, and if you had a guild that wanted to be impactfull in WoE, they helped their people lvl shitty builds and with help in a party it was a breeze to lvl even low int priests, or some wierd shitty agi/vit dancers.
>>
>>341716502
yeah nost was the name of the private server for vanilla wow

think like the comodo patch, the very earliest version of wow
before the popularity exploded
a good number of people never experienced it

WoW never had its source code leaked to the public
and its not that easy to recreate which is unlike RO's case
so good vanilla servers are very rare to come by
>>
>>341703132
Nostalgia combined with a design philosophy that didn't handhold the player through the entire game.

In MMOs these days you spend the whole game being led by the hand from quest to quest, with the only point being to reach the endgame.

In RO (and many other MMOs of the time) the journey to the endgame was fun by itself and any endgame was just extra fun stuff to do at the end. You didn't get led around by a constant barrage of quests so you kind of just did your own thing, playing the game how you wanted to and there were tons of fun secrets to discover that were actually meaningful.

Nowadays the philosophy of leading players through the game like a themepark tour has become so endemic that if an MMO comes out with this older design philosophy people complain you'll often here complaints such as

>"Where's the story?"
>"Where are the quests?"
>"There isn't enough endgame content!"
>"It takes too long to reach the endgame content!"

All these types of complaints occur because the MMO audience has become so used to playing an MMO being "Rush through to max level and grind through the endgame content". So much focus has been put on what to do AFTER you reach level cap that players won't accept an MMO that focuses on the journey like older MMOs did.

It's sad really but I guess this is what happens when you have decades of nothing but themeparks then ask people if they want to play in the sandbox.

Yea, honestly the source code leak was a godsend for RO. And i have been following at least a bit, the issues of WoW private servers, in how hard its actually to make em run good and function properly, and to properly emulate official ones.

I mean, i do know some things about WoW, and i tried it when it came out (the GW took over for me), but it feels like WoW suffered from simplification, and dillution of its world trough the patches.

It went from MMO, to a single player game with occasional dungeons where people met, and a few hub towns where you actually noticed people. That is at least how i felt about it.

They are too clever. I bet if you would throw a few autists and a bunch of people who have no idea how code works at it, they would solve it in a week.

And when someone competent would look at it, he would probably say, That's not how any of this works, its not supposed to look like that.

No, its not. But it does.

Also probably the SWG source code does not even exist anymore, and was lost, or just partially kept.

I suppose I'm going to be the devil's advocate here and say, honestly, it wasn't.

Maybe this is because I ended up spending a lot of time as a solo player, but the only highlights to the game were when I was on a team and often my teammates were busy with other things.

I spent hours on hours struggling to ek out a single percentage of EXP to catch up to them or to get that skill that would make me useful, and outside of a few random instances, the world was fucking dead outside of Prontera and Payon, devoid of NPCs and PCs alike.

Also, cities were ugly, character sprites were hideous, and while people talked about how 'any build was viable', as someone who was told 'go hocus pocus sage', I can tell you that's a fucking lie.

Yes, I'm a faggot who enjoys quests so long as a quest is well done. I'm a faggot who felt taken aback when in City of Heroes there was an actual lore and story to practically everything. Yes, I'm a dick sucking faggot who didn't think a 'good time' was the least thinly disguised grind of any MMO I had ever played. Yes, even GW2 was able to break monotony every rare instance.

RO was only good because it was basically one of the only ones at the time.

Okay, I also admit, a lot of my social memories of RO are also tainted these days by the teammates ultimately being pricks.

The game was designed in such a way that it promoted socialization. Also, the general MMO and gaming community back then was more social and had less outlets to socialize through.

It was a combination of the times and the design, with just a pinch of nostalgia. I still think an MMO could be very successful with the right sandbox elements today, but maybe not to the degree most would hope.
>>
merchant class
>>
>>341721893
Some classes could solo, was still difficult. But back in the day before trans classes. Sometimes you were fucked and at the mercy of parties. If you were a pure forge smith or a pure brew alchemist (pre homonculi), it was a form of mental suicide to grind. However if you we're bored, you could get insanely rich by collecting the ingredients in stacks for them. I remember back when a stack of 100 white leaf went for like an easy 150K.

Now it just seems like no point to be a Smith now to make money. The fact that you can now make/purchase weapon scroll endowing enchants from sage classes, players can now reach much higher DPS output through the use of proper weapon carding with proper element enchant then they ever could through elemental weapon forging these days. But it still is the cheaper alternative.
>>
>>341703132
No handholding, and frustrating as balls to level up. No auto-party tools. Endgame activities are server-wide and require as many people as you can get.

This forced you to socialize by game design. You were literally a stronger player if you socialized better.

This is what MMOs should always be, because this is the only thing MMOs have over any other genres. If an MMO isn't about this at the core, it'll always be better as an arena or lobby multiplayer game.

MMos went to the shitter when developers started caving in to singleplayer faggots. Little by little, people demanded it became more and more playable in solo under the guise of quality of life changes. They quickly turned into stand still and push 1 button to teleport everywhere and "finish" the game in a week.

I don't think private servers work for RO.

The game is just meant to be taken slow, and to meet tons of people in, private servers pretty much just destroy this into meeting a smaller amount of people and getting to the end in a faster amount of time.

And getting to the end in RO is fucking depressing, it's a big goal but in the end it's a flat out stamp of "you've dunnit".

ALSO
ANY OF YALL WANNA PLAY SOME iRO? I KNOW RENEWAL IS GARBAGE AND THAT INTERNATIONAL RO IS GARBAGE BUT LAST TIME WE DID I HAD A TON OF FUN
>>
I think for the time the game was just... Good. You had friends, you had things to do. Current people in MMO's unless it's a group dedicated to working together, you basically can solo anything now. RO forced you to be with people if you wanted the best gear, the best cards, getting into WOE.
>>
>>341726070
I don't even know the state of iRO right now. Or Renewal in general.

Are the 3-2 jobs still stupidly superior to 3-1? Have there been enough balance patches to fix the worst offenders like the Shura? Not that I have time to grind mindlessly right now, but I'm curious

I don't really know much either, I barely got my renewal class going before I had to go back to life, but I had a blast until then.

Man, what a letdown it was. The graphics are just what they should be, the music is good, the amount and variety of jobs is great on paper... but the rest is so terrible. Why would you make it a linear quest-based game? Why would you put cutscene "bosses" that are easily soloable and pretty much a non-threat every few levels? Why would you lock guilds behind a high-level class and not even offer a WoE equivalent? Why the fuck would you make it so boring to play through the same shit again every time you want to try out a different class when that's supposedly the main selling point?

Leika has, but that private server might as well not exist anymore considering the devs fucked up majorly in one area, and then they just decided to stop advertising, so now the server never even reaches more than 100 players.

And again, jRO's changes are mostly party play based, considering they have the highest population of RO in general, so Leika kind of fails to deliver considering the changes don't work well with its less than triple digit pop.

Not linear. Not handholding. Monsters weren't neatly placed around the world in a completely linear parth. Lack of generic mob killing fetching quests. The few quests that there were were hidden and were long story quests that were completely optional. There weren't bosses for babies that you could be killing at level 10. All bosses were rape machines that would roam the map.

We could go all day but essentially it was an interesting mmo, outdated as fuck by now. It had some very cool ideas that sadly no one built upon and the future of mmos turned out to be that everyone would copy on the inferior WoW formula.

I hear a lot of people complaining about how there used to be a lot of secrets in sandbox MMOs and how that was the best thing ever, which I agree with.

But you guys are forgetting how young the internet was back then, with no wiki pages and no data recolection of pretty much anything at all, which meant that one person finding one secret probably meant that guy would be the only one to have a certain item for whole months before someone else got to the place while as today if you tried to do the same, any secret would only last for a few weeks until everybody knows where it is, what to do, and what you'll get.

That kind of game design just can't work anymore, and devs know this, which is why they mostly don't even try. Heck, ToS has been officially out for a month and a half and most of the secret chests and events can easily be Googled.

That's always been the problem with Dancers and Gypsy, they don't bring much to PvM so they're never in on parties makes getting to higher levels slower. They have some nice utility in WoE though, Slow Grace, Ensembles, Scream Spam

I used to play on a 5x taco server. Thara and raydric/noxious was obligatory + Marc/Evil Druid. Most of them devolved into land battles.

Actually, I met many real girls playing this game. I suppose it's due to cute artstyle and hats.

>male guy always acts like an autist when women talk about sex
I hate this shitty anime meme, the writers need to contain their autism

I remember the first day I got a Sunday Hat.

Must have made over 1000 new friends who were all girls in just that day.

Shouldn't 1v1 Scholars, period. Scholars that know what they're doing fuck people's shit up. Same for the rare Battlepriests.

You got one? I've never played it but always wanted to.

There was one I found but couldn't get to work. It's like the first result on google.

>shitty, unbalanced
Being anal-retentive about MUH BALANCE is what ruined MMOs and gaming in general in my opinion
>>
>>341740734
All MMO threads on /v/ are fucking quality tiers of good.

I don't know why, but they just are, MMO discussions, MMO nostalgia, literally anything that you could put MMO into are always just 10/10.

>Dragon Breath
I used to run an iRO guild called Dragon Breath
It was just Rune Knights spamming that shit in WoE and like 1 bard+dancer combo and a scholar.
