You have two approaches.
1. Grouped up
Focus them such that, if two enemies run in to capture a point or move through a doorway, all of your turrets will be hitting them. Combined with you focusing on them with your beam as well as the rest of your team giving them hell, they won't have time to take anything out unless they're on a suicide run or most of your team dies from a strong push.
2. Spread out
Leave two or three at the capture point. Put the rest in places where flankers will come by, but not in a deserted place. That way you'll be tipped off when they come, and they might even finish off desperate flanks.
Either way, MAKE SURE THEY CAN'T DESTROY MORE THAN ONE TURRET AT A TIME. You can spread them over a large doorway such that they have to focus one at a time, and so that they have to actually get past the doorway and start getting hit by the turrets (and your team) to even see the sentry.
Then for the rest, always shield everyone as soon as you notice they respawned, use M2 to throw death balls down entry points and at grouped enemies esp. behind a Reinhardt, M1 to melt everyone to death when they get beat up then try to retreat, and put your teleporter in a semi-hidden spot that's firmly entrenched "your territory" so that it won't be destroyed.

If the POTG system's any indication, Overwatch has a very strange idea of what a "good" player is.
You may be carrying your entire team, but if that Bastion got more eliminations than you, or that Widowmaker camped the payload longer, they might be judged as "better" players than you.

Usually when I'm carrying braindead people I'm on Rein with 4-5 gold medals.
Like I've won with gold on elims, damage, objective time, objective kills and other usually relevant stuff to winning a round and also being on fire despite dying often for a good chunk of the match. Almost any single time I do that I'm the only person capping or pushing while the rest of my team is fucking around or we have 3 snipers or something. Luckily sometimes it happens the enemy team also gets retarded and starts trying to hunt down my retard team so I get free push/cap time while they ignore me for some reason

Well it has to be some simple algorhitm, giving you x score per damage dealt/kill/heal/revive/whatever and then multipliers for stuff like stopping an ult, and whoever got the most scorepoints in the 15 seconds or so potg lasts gets it
So, a reaper getting a quadkill is almost always going to get iot, because it's huge damage and many kills in a short timeframe
