I've always wanted to play this series since they first came out on the PS2 but never got around to it.

It's unpolished but a decent PS2 game.
Just prepare yourself for bad English VAs because Sega thought it would be as huge a success here as it was in Asia.
Hamill is okay as Majima but everyone else is pretty awful.

1 is the worst in the series combat wise but is still very fun.
2 makes things a little smoother but is still clunky, story is arguably the best however.
3 makes things feel alot smoother and has alot of heat attacks, considered worst storythough i like it
4 kiryu is exactly the same but you get 3 other characters
5 adds a new heat trigger works differently for each character and if you are into idols then you play as one.
zero adds 4 fighting styles between 2 charactersthough the 4th one for each character is their fighting style from pervious games eg kiryus style in yakuza 1 - 5 and majima when he is boss in those games

Playing through 1 right now, it is a decent game, but the side quests are a bitch to do. Areas aren't named/translated right or not on maps, even ones I find online. it makes some of the side quest hour long marathons runing around the city to find the right person to talk to.

The camera, both in and out of battle, is the worst part about Yakuza 1. The combat would be more tolerable if that one aspect was fixed.
That said, you can just blast through the main story while avoiding all the side stuff and not miss much going into the next games.

I started with 1 and 2... but I say you can just start with 3 since they do recap everything. 1 and 2 does feel cunky to play compared to 3 and onwards.
