Hey!
I discovered the Brutal Mod a while ago and got interested in Doom again from it. A short time after that, I heard that a new Doom game was coming out, but my machine can't run it so I just let go of the idea and went back to my fond memories of the classic series.

I tried and enjoyed the Brutal Mod and all its modern stuff. And then I tried playing vanilla, without freelook (I use the mouse for turning left and right tho, the keyboard is far too slow), and it's fucking awesome. Nightmare mode, the shitty pistol, I even discovered a secret I never noticed before!

Truly a wonderful series of game.

And so, I come here asking : do you still play the classic game? Has the new game brought new people to this old pearl? For the old guard, if any, do you have any tips for playing in Nightmare mode? I quite suck at the game, as I used to play it as a kid in tiny dick mode.

I love Ultra-Violence now though.
>>
Plenty of people still play Doom these days. Still making maps and shit for it too. They look down on people that say they got into it with Brutal Doom though, so keep that quiet.
>>

>And so, I come here asking : do you still play the classic game?
Yes. D1, 2 and Final trilogy is a stock item on my USB stick. I did try BD couple years ago, and sure the rip&tear shit was fun for a while, but ultimately it just got boring. Original has far superior pacing, balancing, and style.

I also got my wife interested of playing OG Doom just last month. She beat the original 3 chapters like a champ on Hurt Me Plenty. Apparently she enjoyed it, and it was fun watching a total first-timer have an honest, new experience with it. Made me realize how atmospheric first Doom can be too.
>>
>>341687156
>filters
turn that shit off
>>
>>341687156
Nightmare! is a joke difficulty basically, it's understandable if you can't beat it.

Old Doom is one of my favorite games, I still find new maps and mods to play. I even made a couple of maps myself.
>>
>>341687398
I got into it when it came out, back in the days.
I saw a trailer for Brutal Doom and went *back*, though I can easily see why people don't like it, it's pretty childish. But it appealed to the inner child in me that loved Doom because, well, it's about shooting demons in the face, yo.

Far lesser in quality than the classic, but entertaining.

>>341687857
No idea which version it is, and I'm not a computer buff so I have no idea how that kinda shit works.
Which leads me to an important question: right now I'm using GzDoom because it's easy to use, and again, I suck with computers. But yeah, I'd be interested in a more raw experience, as close as possible to the original Dos game that I loved as a kid, so there are a shit ton of graphical options which I all disabled, but I'm not sure that's enough?

I started playing Doom around 2010. Amusingly, it was the RGA2 mod that got me to play it past the shareware episode. Since then, I've grown to enshrine the style of level design in the game more than anything else. Unfortunately, I am disappointed in most of the work that the mapping community has put forth and I find most custom maps to have a very different philosophy to Doom 1's level design. Even projects like DTWID fall short of my expectations because they just make the maps overblown in size rather than making them have fun and interesting flow like Romero's maps have. The maps Romero recently made to promote his new FPS just highlight to me the huge gap in difference between what I feel is good Doom level design and maps made by the community which I think miss the point of Doom.

I barely play Doom these days, I've moved on to Quake. Quake takes what I love about Doom level design and expands upon it with 3D space and with faster and more threatening enemies. I find it to be a true expansion of Doom's formula and I find it hard to go back to Doom after having played it.
>>
>>341689030
There's a source port called Chocolate Doom which gives the closest feeling to playing it on a DOS computer. You can also just turn off the texture filtering in the options.

>>341687156
Brutal doom is fun but easier than the original version.

Try using the smooth doom mod. Classic doom with extra frames of animation.
>>
>>341689783
I'm trying Chocolate right now, but it's still far brighter than the version used in the video. I remember the game being quite dark, what do?

>do you still play the classic game?
Yes, all the time. I've played the original campaigns through multiple times and there's a plainly ridiculous amount of content made by the community.

Right before Doom 4 came out, in fact, a high quality campaign for Doom 2 was released called Ancient Aliens. Play it if you haven't, it's fantastic.
>>
>>341691153
might want to look into Retro doom or crispy doom. slightly higher resolution and 60fps or more
>>
>>341692128
Ok new question : keyboard, keyboard + mouse for left/right turn, or keyboard + mouselook?

I think I'm gonna go with keyboard + mouse, or even mouse only. Mouselook feels wrong though.

Go to /vr/ they have a doom thread up constantly

Don't talk about brutal doom tho, keep that to yourself. It's kind of like cross dressing in private, cool if you do it, but don't let too many people know.

For Ultimate Doom, there's a secret exit that you can only find on Ultra-Violence or Nightmare.
>>
>>341693223
Keyboard and mouse. Mouselook is optional, but I feel like not using it is arbitrary. It's not like looking up and down really helps you in most cases anyway.
>>
>>341687156
Yes as a matter of fact I cleared Scythe 1 today on Ultra-Violence, those last maps pushed my shit in. Guess Scythe 2 is next.

Did you reply to the wrong person?
>>
>>341689030
Chocolate Doom is as "vanilla" Doom as possible, without having to use DosBox.

Also, just go to Options menu, and start disabling shit.

Seriously, GZDoom is FAR from "easy to use". It has TONS of pointless shit enabled and forced by default.
>>
>>341693961
No. He said BD is easier than vanilla.

However, Black Metal difficulty is harder than vanilla UV by a longshot
>>
>>341693223
KB only for the authentic experience.

KB+M, without vertical aim, for more casual experience.
>>
>>341693712
no don't do scythe 2, it feels nothing like scythe 1

Do: Going down, then Alien vendetta
>>
>>341694258
I don't want to start an argument here, but from what I remember, Keyboard + Mouse were the default control on Dos and Win95 versions at least from what I remember. Lots of us didn't own a mouse though.
>>
I played Doom when i was a teenager quite a bit back in the mid 90s. I saw a thread up about Heretic and Hexen a few days ago so I decided to fire it up and I couldnt handle no mouselook.

I googled so shit and found this thing called Doomsday Engine. Any of you guys have experience with this? It seems to work pretty well you just need the .wad from whatever game you want to play on it.
>>
>>341694809
>Doomsday
If we're talking enhanced engines, ZDoom/Zandro or bust
>>
>>341694490
you remember wrong. default doom config was keyboard only. the mouse controlls were basically all mouse like you pushed forward on the mouse to walk forward and pulled back to walk backwards. Moving left or right would turn you.
>>
>>341695014
So whats wrong with Doomsday? It seems to work well for me but like i said Im not really an enthusiast.
>>
>>341695114
That's what I meant by mouse control, as in, it's smoother for moving back or forward, but it's essential for Speedruns or MP to be able to turn with the mouse.
>>
>>341694419
Will do anon, I already have AV on queue.

Scythe 2 is one of the best mapsets of all time, but holy shit
around map23, pistol-start UV becomes a slog
don't feel bad if you have to switch to HMP for that map onwards

>>341693223
Use PrBoom+ pistol start for the intended experience. Should default to mouselook off, keyboard +mouse horizontal look.
>>
>>341695273
Nothing wrong with it, it's okay for the base games like most engines, but a good deal of mods are made for ZDoom or its derivatives
>>
>>341695273
GZdoom/Zdoom, or Zandronum are the standard for mods and multiplayer support, and many mods are built using Zdoom features. e.g. Brutal doom doesn't run in Doomsday, as far as i know.
>>
>>341695530
Yeah I remember playing Scythe 2 on UV a few years ago, there was a map that spawned a Cyberdemon behind you in the starting point, shit was so tough I ended up dropping it.
>>
>>341695740
>Brutal doom doesn't run in Doomsday

This is a bad thing?
>>
>>341694243
What modifiers does that edgy sounding difficulty have?
>>
>>341696549
Not this guy, but Black Metal has faster enemies, they do more damage, and there is a shitload of them. Not very clever but it does make it harder. I think it's the required level of play considering all the boosts you get (mouselook, kicking, rolling, human shields, and the assault rifle)

How?
>>
>>341687156
OP, do you live under a rock? Are you a newfag? There's something off about your whole post.
>>
>>341697997
The latest version is v20b. To take a human shield, you need to have eaten a berserker power-up, and you merely need to hit an incapacitated enemy in the chest (like when they're agonizing). You can also take off their heads and throw it at people, but I don't know how to do that.

>>341698028
I'm not a regular /v/ poster, I hail from /tg/ and don't know much about the videogame community. Videogames are a thing of my childhood, and I don't hang out with people who talk about them, it might explain a few things, yes.

I think when you compare one difficulty to another, uv to uv, etc, brutal doom would be easier.
difficulties that weren't in the original obvious are going to be harder

>edgy (that's why it's fun)
>easier (like I said, BM is a thing and very fun)

>>341699156
It's not very useful honestly. Like the rolling, I never found use for it, but again, might be because I'm not really a hardcore gamer. I do despise Call of Duty, so i take it I'm still allowed here.

>>341700281
I think the main reason Brutal Doom get shat on is that it really goes toward the "modern" way. Purists can get salty about it. Myself, I found it pretty fun, but still, I don't get as much enjoyment as I get from the original game, for some reason.

Factually wrong. It was set up for Wolf3D style mouse-only control. You could use the keyboard OR the mouse. Or you could run setup and set up a good config allowing you to use both at once, like a sane person.

With no experience with any megawads prior save Doom 2, I played through the entirety of TNT the other day.

Man, Team TNT really fucking loves their chainguns. I've started Plutonia today and within the first level already found an agitating skeleton closet and a chaingunner one opening up from behind me.

>>341700583
>I think the main reason Brutal Doom get shat on is that it really goes toward the "modern" way

Actually most of it would come from forum drama spanning the Doomworld, ZDoom, and Zandronum forums which SgtMark didn't handle very well, as well as the "DOOM THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED" kind of retards it brought into the community that give mappers and other modders some headaches.
>>
>>341701816
I've never been one for online play, but I'd love to actually try that kind of stuff.
>>
>>341702781
TNT and Plutonia as Final Doom, along with id adding the Nightmare difficulty to the games was in correspondence with newsgroups and BBS posters saying the game was too easy, even on UV.
