Wrong. 2 Is objectively better for someone coming to ME the first time. It's the most well rounded of the three. If they like what they see then you can go deeper into character development/rpg by playing one, or if combat was your thing push on to 3.

Play ME1. It's genuinely fun and feels like older Bioware and older WRPGs in general.
They removed those mechanics in general in ME2 for more of a Gears of War style system with very little RPG mechanics. However the loyalty missions were fun and I put up with some of it's bullshit and the final battle was fun considering your choice did matter in that game. If you fucked something up then you killed an ally. ME2 was the end of the series for me. It had choices that mattered.
ME3 was a skidmark on the boxers of everything I held dear. I didn't play it on principle.
Andromeda? It's all hype and horseshit. Just wait and see. Fuck Bioware. This will be the entry that makes me see them as something more than shit on the end of my shoe at this point if they pull it off.

Telling anyone to play a game that is objectively inferior to another game in that same series as a starting point is moronic. Every character is reintroduced in a way that doesn't require foreknowledge to get to know and care about. Literally every character has a back story you can explore through side missions and dialogue. It's saying you have to play the Witcher 1 to fully enjoy 2. Or even 3 for that matter. The characters are so well defined in ME2 that you don't need 1 to hold your fucking hand and teach baby how to feel. 2 does that just fine.
2 is the most well rounded game of the series, like I said. If anything is going to capture a new players attention and make them want more, it's 2. Then they have the option to go either way, and that's the way I wish I would have experienced it. So my recommendation stands.
