I think experiencing the game by playing it is more enjoyable. It has some they sort of add to its charm in a way. People say the combat/gameplay isn't that great but its not really bad, just sort of simplistic. There are really fun parts like the bullet hell stuff. Why are there so many people set on spreading misinformation?
It has been said over and over that Platinum is only in charge of the combat system and getting the gameplay to be smooth and responsive like they often do with the likes of Bayonetta and MGR.
But Platinum games also usually suffer of being rather bland and uninteresting lacking that something else that keeps you hooked. Well, thanks god they're only in charge of the gameplay, and Taro is also supervising them so they get the gameplay fits the game's atmosphere.
Everything else is by SE, directed by Taro, and all of his older games would have easily been GOTY if it wasn't for their shit gameplay, heck, Nier is one of my favorite games of the last generation, despite its shit gameplay.

While almost every boss can start bullet hell sections, you can always just cut through or shoot down any non-dark bullet, like in that video.
Also remember that other than bullet hell sections, Nier also had isometric sections, side-scroller sections, a rail-shooter section and even a text adventure.

This is always a hard question to answer because there's so much backround stuff you miss out on with not playing the previous games; at the same time, getting your hands on a copy of Nier or Drakengard 1 is annoying/expensive and the gameplay is shit so
I'd say you don't have to play them, but I'd recommend reading like...a Let's Play or something so you know what happened in the previous games. If you want to play one of the previous ones, play Nier 1 but prepare to work to get all the endings.

Cavia games are too repulsive lore/characterwise to attract Tumblr/Reddit fans, and the game play is too shit to attract the usual /v/ autists. This game will never become popular, so don't worry about it. It's way too niche. Just enjoy it for what it is.
