If you play medic, feel free to protect yourself if need be. Try not to pick fights, let your pocket or your team do that for you. A little bit of crossbow bolting the other team is fine, just keep in mind your purpose.
If you get stranded do your best to retreat while dealing damage or if you are certain there is no escape like scouts wanting to kill you go ham and feel free to lay into them. Remember your uber is precious.
Unless your team is doing just fine or they are fine with you doing combat medic please don't, you are not Rambo, you are not ArraySeven, you are a faggot with a god complex stating that you think that you playing combat medic is just as good as anyone else playing scout, heavy or any of those other classes. You are not and even if you somehow are you can do a better job helping your team by doing anything else.

How do you even play Mercy in PuGs? HOW? There is typically such a minimal level of coordination or competency demonstrated by the average random, that, between them constantly running off solo and dying alone or throwing themselves into the enemy team meatgrinder there seems to be so little room for actual, meaningful support play.

This is true for me. I haven't played an FPS since HL2, but my friend wanted me to play with him. I pretty much just play Mercy, Winston or Roadhog so I don't have to aim.
