It's a genre that's only real appeal is it's story telling, The same as walking simulators, and adventure games. Only with a Skinner box progress meter to give you a false sense of game play.
You can completely gut the 'zany satire' from GTA and it still be a fun sand box game. Hell huniepop without the porn scenes is still a playable match three game.
But an JRPG is basically no more than a cookie clicker. It can be a well disguised cookie clicker with memorable plots and characters. But a cookie clicker non the less.
