Here, let's take an actually likeable black character in games. The demoman. You control him, point his GLs, get the kills. But he's likeable because of his attitude and reactions to what's going on around him. He is a character, that acts and reacts a certain way, independent of the player. I can't make the demoman greedy, or a pompous fool. His character is set by the writers, and he's very likeable.
