Before that they outnumbered the Germans one and a half times over in men, twice over in armor, and were evenly matched in the air. After Dunkirk closed the French were outnumbered, under equipped, and in exceedingly poor spirits. Thanks to archaic relay systems for orders, poor tactics and bone headed leadership they were more or less doomed at that point. They still fought exceedingly hard. The Germans were losing 3 men for every Frenchman lost, but it was still unsustainable for the French. Especially since they were constantly giving ground and quickly lost most of their industry in the first week, leading to ammo shortages, fuel shortages, weapon shortages. Also sabotage destroyed a large amount of anti aircraft weaponry, 10,000-20,000 estimated were destroyed or unproduced because of sabotage. It's debatable how much that would have actually changed, but it certainly couldn't have hurt. The Luftwaffe decimated French positions after they achieved air superiority and the French had a decided lack of anti aircraft weapons.

Every field artillery gun, every machine gun, every rifle that the French had, must have been firing. I had never heard such a noise.
The hail of bullets going over our heads was unbelievable, but it was not stopping the gas. The wind kept moving the gas towards the French lines. We heard the cows bawling, and the horses screaming. The French kept on shooting.
They couldn’t possibly see what they were shooting at. In about 15 minutes the gun fire started to quit. After a half hour, only occasional shots. Then everything was quiet again. In a while it had cleared and we walked past the empty gas bottles.
What we saw was total death. Nothing was alive.
All of the animals had come out of their holes to die. Dead rabbits, moles, and rats and mice were everywhere. The smell of the gas was still in the air. It hung on the few bushes which were left.
When we got to the French lines the trenches were empty but in a half mile the bodies of French soldiers were everywhere. It was unbelievable. Then we saw there were some English. You could see where men had clawed at their faces, and throats, trying to get breath.
Some had shot themselves. The horses, still in the stables, cows, chickens, everything, all were dead. Everything, even the insects were dead.

You can see at one point that the Assault class literally does not have access to bolt-action rifles at all when someone switches out their primary.

the lewis gun needed 2 people to operate on the go, and the germans were the only ones who used smg's widely.
German weapons, contrary to popular belief, was fucking ass compared to french and english hardware, especially lee metford and enfield.
the aperture sight is true and was invented before WWI, but was unnecessary at the time as the optics would probably shatter from the shockwave of the explosives.

You know, I'm really glad that in WWII the Germans didn't use gas against the British. It would have kicked off the most unholy period of warfare in history; apparently Churchill had enough gas, canisters and bombers to conduct a continuous 60-day gas bombing campaign against most major German cities and was planning on doing it if gas came into play on the German side.

This. In all these threads you read so many ridiculous posts by people who clearly never read a book about WWI or that time period in general. It is for these people that it would be good if BF1 has at least a minimal level of authenticity. You can make a good selling game about a fictional steam punk WWI focussed on minorities that fought. But you can also make a WWI game that has at least some degree of historical accuracy that would be fun to play and sell well. That would at least be more respectful to all the people who fought and died back then.

Infantry should have a hard time to reach objective's because before every major offensive the entire battlefield would be shelled for days.
