DQ has a lot of puns in the game. The thing is Japanese is a very punny language. Happens when you have a pretty limited vocal language. English isn't that punny so forcing so many doesn't always work.
But honestly the only big problem I had with the new localization has been the accents. DQ4 was BAD on every level possible. DQ5 was much better but still had weird accents here and there that really didn't help. And there's the DQ5 boss.
Everything they shown so far with DQ7 I can't really remember a big accent. Maybe Prince Kiefer might speak like royalty but that's WAY different than forcing accents to people.

Some dungeons were altered a bit (80, maybe 90% of layouts are the same though). Some sections were made "easier" (not sure of the specifics of this, but people were definitely noting that Dharma Temple isn't nearly as bad as the original anymore, which makes me think that they changed the original restrictions on that area), shards are spoonfed to you (not like they were hard to find in the first place), supposedly some dialogue and cutscenes are shorter. That said, none of the dialect in the PS1 version was particularly long, despite what others will bullshit you on. The jobs take less battles to master (notable early on, but take a few MORE battles for the later classes, but still less time overall) and skills better balanced (no more taking 2 or 3 class-tiers to get a single fucking skill, unlike the original, which stupidly had "gaps" between learning skills in some of the classes)

I like DQIII. But outside of that game, I'm not a big fan of class based games. Even DQVI and VII, I didn't enjoy as much as the others. You may just want to play a game with set classes and characters. DQIV and V would be the best bet.

Pretty much. SquareEnix even said they onlt released it because of 'fan outcry'. I feel insulted though since we were 'outcrying' three years ago. Even more than FF fans with Beavely Default and Type-0. Yet DQVII took forever. And we still don't have Monsters, Slime 3, Theathrythm or X.

DQVII has a story even longer than DQVIII. But also uses a class/job system. Its also harder than DQV and VIII, if that's something you like. It also has a time travel story and some similar characters/designs to Chrono Trigger. Also easily the darkest entry in the series in tone.

I bought DQ7 during its PS1 launch, and it was the grindiest, most poorly paced JRPG I've ever played. Characters constantlyleaving and rejoiningreally screws up your job progression plans.
I'll wait for some impressions and see how it's been improved.

I haven't played the PSX version, but I have played the 3DS version and I've read about the changes. Just off the top of my head:
- Less grinding required. I maxed out several jobs without even trying.
- Normal level EXP grinding might not be as bad either, I don't know. It didn't bother me.
- There are certain parts where you're just taken where you need to go automatically instead of having to do it yourself like in the original. It's just little journeys that are filler anyway, nothing important.
- The first dungeon, which was pure puzzles, is gone.
- Dharma Shrine was apparently really hard in the original. I didn't have any trouble with it, so it seems they re-balanced it.
- You have have a lithograph piece indicator, so it's easier to find them now.
Plus a fuckload of other changes, it'll take too long to list them all.
I want to get into dragon quest, but I have very limited RPG experience. The only ones I've played that aren't western bioware/bethsda shit is Chrono Trigger.
What are some good starting points for the series?

I started with I and went from there, but method isn't for everybody. If not that, then you can't go wrong with III, IV, V, or VIII. VII is pretty good too, starting with VII 3DS won't be a bad idea (it's just really long is all).
Yuji Horii suggests starting with IV.
