The first Nier had the danmaku-esque elements, yes, but this looks like a direct upgrade to everything gameplay-wise.
That being said, Nier is a fucking excellent game. The story, music and designs are top tier.

From the intro and the spinning blade attack at the start I expected the boss to be really lame, but the later phases seemed pretty interesting. Didn't seem very hard, but I bet that was the game's first boss since the fuccboi is probably only a living character in the introduction section.

The DoD/Nier franchise have a small but pretty dedicated fanbase, including a lot of folks on /v/ but because it's been a few years now since DoD3, no shit there haven't been daily threads about Nier. When a DoD/Nier thread does pop up, it's usually pretty great.

Also,the DoD games never get well received critically because despite being action RPGs, the action has always been their weak point. Finally it looks like that's no longer going to be the case.

Well if you weren't around back when it came west, I dont blame the confusion.
Much like other games by Cavia, it has a real niche appeal but a dedicated fanbase, and has often been critically unpopular for some of the reasons Drakengards were too; lack of polish, generally weird and not open to many players; gameplay that was either too odd or just not deep enough.
Neir had plenty of solid stuff going for it and is VERY unique in terms of setting, story, and even gameplay but lacked hugely in budget and polish. Made up for it in heart I think.
Many people love the writing of Yoko Taro in particular, and the music is another thing it totally nails.
Throw the established team of Platinum games handling the combat side with some more funding, with Yoko and his team back again and we'll at the very least get a Nier that's more fun to play, if not something that's just another refreshing Cavia game.

My japanese is really rough, but i liked it.
The OST has a little too many slow piano tracks aside from that it's good. It has a battle system similair to Bravely Default with jobsystems. Not as many jobs, but they have more depth.
The characters are nice, but don't really have too much character progression, you pretty much have a gial and you pretty much go after that goal for 90% of the game. The artstyle is amazing though. Overall i'd say a good 8/10 but i don't really like scores
