My point isn't that Taro gameplay is good, it's that Platinum gameplay is regurgitated to the point it isn't exciting anymore and it takes something from the game's personality away when it transfers over different franchises. Being a fan of the original Nier, I gave other Taro games a try. I fucking hated Drakengard 1 and 3, and didn't even bother to play the second one.
Was Nier just a fluke? A magnum opus to never be surpassed? It's amazing how the writing in that tops pretty much every single DoD game, and I fear the story in Automata might end up being really weak in comparison to the first, as well. The music doesn't sound as nice, either.

The writing and characters in DoD3 weren't as endearing, and their motivations weren't as emotive either. Nier achieved a fine balance that DoD3 didn't, instead opting to throw all of that out of the window.
DoD3 feels quirky for the sake of being quirky, and the writing, dialogue and characters all suffer thanks to it. Nier never had that problem.

I played dod1, Nier, and some of dod3 and the only one I can really say I liked was drakengard.
Nier got too bleak too fast so it was hard to want to play past ending B and I couldnt stomach d3 plus everything remotely interesting about it is in supplemental materials anyway.

Well I can't argue that DoD3 did anything better than Nier except for making everyone tear their hairs out for the true end. I personally enjoyed how different the experience was I guess. Sure it's not as great as Nier but it's story was interesting and had unexpected turns which I really loved.

They're pretty different and Nier is considerably more palatable for most because of its format.
The quest structure in Nier means a lesser focus on combat and a more free form approach to learning about the world. If someone wants to not bother with a long ass quest they can just not bother and play the story onwards or whatever. Drakengard 3 on the other hand is purely linear and uses the combat sections -> story sections -> repeat structure, which means its gameplay strength relies entirely on the quality of its combat.
Similar Nier's story is a bit more palatable since Nier is more relatable than Zero and the rest of the cast are a bit more down to earth in Nier too.
Note that "palatable" doesn't necessarily mean "better", just easier for most people to enjoy. I think D3 has better combat and Zero is my favourite Taro character.

Tabata really has a problem with making the combat "feel" good. I mean, from what I've played of his games, it's not really mechanically shallow, but the feeling of hitting, dodging, etc is not great.
Nomura on the other hand, keeps mechanics on the more simple side, but how the game "feels" is on point. Animations are fluid yet snappy, there's just the right amount of hitstop, shit like that.
