I send a helicopter and see there are around 30-40 soldiers slowly merging towards Drassen as well from different directions.

That is nothing. I shat a brick when I realized that in jagged alliance when someone fires at you each bullet has a potential to kill you outright. And then enemy sends a dude with heavy machine gun that fires salvos of 10+ bullets. No nonsense like XCOM where pistol does 1-2 dmg and assault rifle doing 3-4 dmg.

I just bought it when it was on sale the other week and am finding it hard to get into. I've only played the first quadrant and it seems good but some stupid shit happens some times, like why do my dudes sometimes walk backwards?

Also i hear 1.13 is good, but if im having trouble with vanilla how much more complex is it? Can you have multiple IMPs? Can you search boxes and shit inside houses or only get drops from enemies?
>>
>>341581842

I prefer the original to be honest.
>>

1.13 is a bloated mess. you definitely want to play vanilla first.
>>
>>341581842
Walking backwards happens when you alt tab. The game has an issue with modifier keys getting sticky when you switch in and out. Just press alt once to clear it off.

Multiple IMPS are possible if your configuration allows for it. Check the INIs. You can search boxes, but most don't have much useful in them. Boxes in obvious storage areas have great loot though. By obvious storage areas I mean warehouses and the like.

Honest question here, what do you people think this word means?
>>
>>341585204
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennials
>Millennials (also known as the Millennial Generation[1] or Generation Y, abbreviated to Gen Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X. There are no precise dates for when the generation starts and ends; most researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to around 2000.

I played this for a bit last year then got bored and went back to OpenXcom. I feel like I missed something. Creeping six guys with handguns around getting into plink-offs with random scatterings of mooks with their own plinky handguns wasn't too cool. I'm sure there's more to it if I keep going but I feel like something was just off.

Also the controls felt funny. Maybe they let you do a lot but I consider UFO to be the peak of squad-based TBS.

Is there any stuff that people usually get wrong about JA2 when they first try it? Was I probably doing something wrong?

This guy has it right. When you alt-tab out of the game for some reason it thinks Alt is still being held when you return to it. Press alt again and you'll be fine.

Also just so you know, alt can be used for backstepping and sidestepping which is really useful.

Start feels weak with pistol plink-offs. Game becomes more engaging when enemies start using regular firepower like shotgun, smg, rifles and when they start coming in bigger numbers (10-60). You can grit your teeth for up to 3-7 days in game or you can modify the number and weapon loadout before the campaign start in game options.

>>
>>341588723
Sorry. No. You get dumped right in the deep end of the pool.

In vanilla your 1 imp and maybe 2-3 aim mercs will have exceptionally shit gear. And get dumped off the helicopter. In every single map apart from the very first you'll be outnumbered 3:1 at least. And full size drassen 1.13 counter attack can pit your maybe 10 guys against more than 70 reds.

A couple of mercs you can hire come with SMGs, even if you don't want the merc specifically you can hire them for a day and take all their shit before firing them. A few tommy guns and MP5s will make all the difference during those first few wimpy pea shooter fights.

The central town (I've forgotten the name) has good maps for fighting while still carrying the earlier gear, plenty of cover and ways to keep the engagements up close and messy.
After that I'll sometimes wander top left and take the SAM base, or even take a big detour down south-east for the training base and rich people resort... then prepare myself mentally and physically to take Drassen and rebuff the counter attack.

5.56 is a fantastic round, especially out of a 16'' to 20'' barrel, but it has some shortcomings
In order of significance
>barrier penetration performance
>terminal ballistics at long range (400m++)
>short barrel performance
6.8 SPC, and the similarly intended 6.5 Grendel, are about addressing the first and third points mostly
For the second point, that's why there's modern weapon systems developed to use classic 7.62x51 NATO

Fastest possible speed in the game right off the bat, and he's a dirt cheap MERC merc. Motherfucker can run further than tanks can move in one turn. Get him in your initial team, and his terrible MRK scores won't matter since he can just sprint right up to a guy and pistol headshot him from pissing range. Then probably sprint back into cover too, given how stupid fast he is.

Later on, when his MRK is higher, I usually give him a burst fire SMG or carbine so he burst headshots someone from medium range instead. No danger of activating his psycho full auto with burst mode. Pretty good idea to give him a little medical training as well so he can sprint through multiple houses to slap a bandage on someone.

>>
If i like the modern XCOM, can i get into this?
>>
>>341595702
Yep.
>>
>>341595790
Like, what are the main differences?
>>
>>341595908
modern XCOM is pretty tabletop-like with lots of dice-rolling and arbitrary limits on what works and what doesn't. JA2 and old xcom are more simulation-like.

The most striking difference is that being shot once is pretty likely to kill your guys for pretty much the whole game. The limits to what you can do in a turn is also completely different. Rather than 2 big things they can do a shitload of small and specific things. Really the whole comparison is like that. XCOM feels broad and game-like while JA2 and old xcom are all about small details and management-autism. XCOM management is a joke compared to the older stuff.
>>
>>341595908

biggest difference is that weapons that shot multiple bullets don't do 2-3 dmg more like in xcom. Each bullet hurts for the same amount. And you are spewing tons of them in short amount of time. So you can later on equip a guy with a full auto weapon; spray an area and kill/main bunch of enemies. Also enemies can do the same to you.
>>
>>341596462
Modern xcom

>can only interrupt once
>can't even choose your facings so you end up with retardotron troops ignoring every single flank
>cinematic 'discovery' that can only have the cutscene disabled, leaving enemy mobs with free turns anytime one of their members leaves and enters detection. Meaning the ayys get roughly 3-5 turns to your 1.
>>
>>341596751
I LOVE giving my machine gunner a belt fed weapon and the lrak vest.

>supress the entire squad of enemy mooks lettingnmy squad outflank.
>>
>>341596761
Yeah that 'discovery' mechanic is why I've probably put at least 500 hours into UFO but only gone through XCOM the one time really.
>>
>>341596462
JA2 is also kind of open world, where you have a big map you can just roam and do stuff.. mainly just liberating cities though.
There are also some quests you can complete, but a lot less than in an actual RPG.

I like that, when you shoot a gun in JA2, the bullet actually travels through the environment, and can hit something you didn't want to hit..
From what I remember in XCOM it's just a pure diceroll, where it either hits the target or doesn't.

You can also use stealth properly in a lot less scripted way than in the newest XCOM.
>>
>>341595908

>>341596462
>>341596751

What these guys said. Best example for ja2 was from when my friend told me he was defending drassen from full-scale counterattack. During the fight he was getting low on ammo so he sent 1 guy to run to his weapon storage (in different city sector). Get fully equipped with spare ammo, run back into warzone, dodge enemy soldier and back into defensive position to give ammo to rest of the team.
>>
>>341595908
You don't develop equipment, you buy them from ingame merchants. Sometimes enemies drop their equipment as well.

Money flows in regularly from silver mines you capture. This money goes to paying for your mercs' contracts, buying stuff from merchants, paying local militia that you've trained to defend capture towns or wander around the countryside to wreck enemy parties/get wrecked themselves.

Cover is not that clear-cut, you don't have overlays telling you what level of cover something provides. That said, if it looks like something can block bullets, it probably can.

Suppression is very powerful and works by just having bullets fly past nearby a guy. AP available for the next turn gets reduced, and you can scare a guy into immobility by shooting enough bullets near him. Having a machinegunner hose down a street from one end while the rest of your guys move up and pick off enemies cowering on the floor is a very common and useful tactic. That said,

Ammo has weight and are resources you have to keep track of. So if you want to have a machinegunner hose down the street non-stop turn after turn, you better have brought enough ammo for him.

Alerting a guy doesn't mean end of stealth mode. You can run back into the darkness and sneak around till they stop looking and just fall into a heightened state of alertness.

Off the top of my head these are some of the mechanical differences. There's plenty more, but other folks can fill you in.

it's caused by a mod (1.13) to begin with - original game doesn't have the whole LBA gear system

could've been patched in a nightly build but I can't be bothered with installing it now, as it could fuck up my saves even more. maybe next campaign...
>>
Had to put down this game because as soon as I captured the airport enemies were suddenly popping everywhere and they rapidly overran my still rookie units.

you could have disabled the counter-attack, or gotten cheeky ( >>341583124 )

and the counter-attack only really happens in 1.13, so you must've went against common advice to try vanilla first
>>

Eh it was pretty fun playing hide and seek in the wilderness for a while, one of my guys was ultra stealthy and couldn't never be found.

if you play any build with the covert ops trait (which has been available since the last stable build in 2014 i think), you can literally walk past soldiers while disguised and shoot them in the back from point blank and then walk away in the same turn.

Serious smafu here

What were the attribute grinding actions again (for 1.13)?
>>
>>341605542
>Leadership
spam orders to a militia
>Strength/Health
put on as much weight as possible and keep walking/running around (when tired, drink from canteen, then [ctrl+.] and fill canteen)
alternatively there was something with sending the merc to travel on foot in mountain sectors and then immediately cancelling the order
>Explosives
spam planting and disarming mines
>Agility
sneak behind enemies at night

This one is amazing with those vehicle slot sized ammo crates. I like to recruit the 2 guys from the prison and have them haul all the ammo back to the hospital.

Reminder to ignore the cucks that say to start with 1.13 and start with Stracciatella instead to get a feel for the original game.
>>
Now I want to play again.

What is a good fun strat to play with or to start the game. I don't want to stress with Drassen.
>>
>>341610006
Drassen is actually incredibly easy if you have an IMP with 2 points in covert ops and 1 in night ops. Alternatively, if you don't want to cheese the AI, you can always reduce the max number of enemies per sector in the .ini (though this will result in more waves of reinforcements).

So uh, i've got JA2 installed now.

Where do i start? Do i play vanilla? Do i play with mods? I dont understand
>>
>>341610979
Go through vanilla at least once.
>>
>>341610006
Right down the middle to the Rich People's Resort, then kill em all
>>
>>341610979
Use stracciatella for vanilla. It's an unofficial patch that lets you play in larger resolutions and fixes bugs without changing any game mechanics.
>>
>>341611190
Um, i have it installed now, and i just get a black screen trying to boot it.
>>
>>341610006
go San Mona first
>>
>>341612954
>>341612952
Never mind! I fixed it with Straccitella.

Does it work together with 1.13 .later on if i wanna play that?
>>
>>341612952
Isn't that based on Wildfire, though?
>>
>>341576956
>implying you're not a millenial
>>
>>341613313
No. You don't need it for 1.13. I like running JA2 in 1280 x 960 in a window since it's a good balance between text being to small and game being too blurry.

>>341613486
No.
