Daily reminder The Wise One killed Isaac's family. Twice. Then revived them like it was nothing. He fears alchemy because it's strong and he is weak.
The Wise One is the true antagonist. He'd rather watch Weyard definitively burn than have a chance to survive if that chance means his power is contested.

Isaac at least has the benefit of character development. He's the control, the wayward soul in the story. Felix has motivations, Sheba has motivations, Piers has motivations, but Isaac has to gain his during the story.
