Most of the new generation of "gamers" don't even know what it is besides some vaporware meme shit. Sort of like how 5-6 years ago it was duke nukem forever filling that spot.
It'll be released to similar critical and fan panning, I reckon.
It'll probably be a solid game with a few flubs like DNF too, the length of time to go from "building up hype with secretive development" has been passed, then lapped around about 6 times.

If another Half-Life game ever comes out it will probably be made by another developer. Arkane would be my bet, they've worked with Valve in the past. I have no clue what Valve does with all their manpower but it's been years and there hasn't been any indication that they're working on a big game, if they're even still capable of doing so.

They've laid off tons of talent, and have hired mostly for steam, dota, and CS:GO in recent years. Most of their original designers are in cushy community rep positions or retired. Not that it's a bad thing, just that it doesn't really look like they're aiming to ramp up production on a big new title. Why would they? I can't blame them for not wanting to stake money on something that's not a sure bet anymore, when they have two cash cows, three if you count TF2 I guess, sitting right in their lap.

I think they could turn the issue around by releasing a Half-Life game that's not about gordon. Like a shorter game based around Alyx.
It would show Valve hasn't abandoned the franchise, just hasn't been working on it. Unlike Duke Nukem that was in development hell for different reasons.

Doom 4 wasn't really expected. If no one touched it for another 10 years, most people wouldn't complain.
HL2 ep2 ended on a cliffhanger and was expected to be released within a couple of months since it's the whole point with episodic releases. At this point might as well let Arcane do HL3 or just release something within the universe as a show of good will that the franchise isn't dead.
